Brake and Speedometer Cable
Does anyone know if the cables go above or below the motor support cross beam? Mine is above and they seem like they have to bend around the fan before they get to the firewall. If they go below what holds them in place? Also what is the best fix for the cables pulling into the fire wall?
Thanks, New 914 owner, Chris. |

On our stock 74 they are below and held to the bar with wire ties.

Chris,
By "pulling into the firewall" I assume you mean the firewall sheet metal has been torn around one of the tubes? This happened to my clutch cable tube just after it broke loose inside the tunnel. I repaired this area by cutting a piece of heavy gauge steel slightly larger than the area that was "torn", drilled a hole in it the size of the clutch tube and used JB Weld to "weld" it into place. I did not feel comfortable welding around the fuel lines. I cleaned the area to bare metal before applying the JB Weld. This solution has worked very well. Good Luck

On my 74, and most of the side-shifter 914s I know, the cables run above the bar or (in the case of the clutch cable) through a hole in the bar. They do wind up bending out to the side, but not too absurdly far generally.
Pretty much any way you keep them from hitting things (fan shroud, exhaust, road debris, the road surface, etc.) is fine. --DD
