Question about leaky flywheel seal
Installed my fresh 2.0 which had been sitting since overhaul in 1984. After 300 miles only apparent problem was a substantial leak from the flywheel seal. Pulled tranny and replaced seal, flywheel o-ring and clutch disc (may not have been necessary but wanted 6 spring disc). Took first drive today and it is still leaking. Not as bad as before, but it leaks! Any ideas? Do seals need to "break in"? Do I just live with it until clutch gets oily?

I have no experience with that, but I can't recall a break in period on that seal..
![]() I don't know what goo is applied to install that seal, did you use any? Maybe someone can chime in on that. M

are you sure it's the seal and not the oil galley plugs?

galley plugs were dry, threaded allen head type done at time of the overhaul.

Did you make sure that the lip on the flywheel where the seal rides was not worn? If it was, you will have to push the seal in further to ride on a non-worn area.
Not sure what else it could be offhand. --DD

Just replaced the seal on the 6. The seal that was in there seemed to be an aftermarket beige Japanese job that, when compared with the German pink seemed a little different in the dimensions. Not a lot, but a little.
I'll tell you next week if it leaks. James

Didn't carefully examine the new seal. It was kind of a red/brown color. Source was impeccable.

Is it leaking trans fluid or engine oil? I think you know where I am going with this.

Craig, you gotta work on your reading skills. I said oil from the flywheel seal, not from the transmission.
