I'm told that a 915 with a really top setup for mid-engine use shifts as well as a regular 914 side-shifter. Bring money, though.
The 930 gearbox is often used when you have a motor with a lot of torque. The guys at Renegade Hybrids deal with this stuff all the time, give them a yell if you want to talk about it. --DD |
Not sure how fast my 914 3.2 is, but I have had it going 125 sideways as I lost it at the Kink at CMP.
|
With all this talk of power/weight ratios I was wondering how much a 3.0+ six weighs. I am working putting a 240lb- 200HP motor in my car and I want to know how that compares.
While we are it what does a 2.0 4 cylinder weigh? |
I'm not sure, but I think that the weight of the engine plus "support systems" (e.g., oil tank and lines, etc.) of the 3.0 is "about" 200 lbs more than the four-cylinder.
I will reiterate again to Chappy: If your car is only as fast as a stock Six, something is wrong with it. That something could wind up costing you five figures to fix if you just let it go. It's worth the ~$100 to have it dyno'd to see if it is really putting out close to 200 HP the way it should be. Or at least finding someone with an SC and trying some short sprints. SCG,
The only thing I hit was the #2 brake marker. My friends secretly gathered up the pieces and made a 'Spin of the Day' trophy for me... |

I know the comparision came about because a comment was made about how cars won't be as fast as bikes, but at least take a top of the line race bike to go with that Enzo. Things would even up a bit. And to keep this on topic... My friend gave me a ride in his 72 1.7, definately not fast but the pickup was fun. Not breath taking, but it was fun. I'd like to take a ride in a 3.0 someday... |
Dave
-Ok guys beat me up for telling it like it is, my car runs great and has very drivable power, my good friend drove my car the other night ( he has a stock 6 ) he didnt jump on it but he felt that my car didnt feel much different than his- When I am driving around and keeping the r's below 4 taking it easy like he was that night it feels like it could be a 2.0. He never jumped on it and the short bursts he did take at it never got up in the powerband. Like I say it has very drivable power, and it runs and sounds great. I have been trying to get my car into the local expert to get his opinion and hope to know soon. I gave my brother a ride and he felt the car performed a lot like his 80 SC. Dont worry about it Dave the engine is fine. I would like it to be a little faster thats all. There is a local club member I have met recently who I just purchased racedeck flooring for my garage from. he also participates in these forums. he has built a few 914 6 track cars and has many porsches, if I catch him up at the store I will get his opinion. |
Get a stopwatch and test it. Then you'll know exactly how fast it is.
|
Chappy, I'm not trying to beat you up. I'm simply saying that an engine that may only be making ~half of its rated power output is probably not in good shape. We can't tell from your description, but it sounds like your engine may be doing that. And it is probably worth knowing for certain, because 911 engine rebuilds are bloody expensive.

I had my car checked out, all is well as I suspected.
I Guess I have a different measure of fast than some of you have. I visited with one of my buddies at the Subaru dealership yesterday, I plan on giving the Wrx a test drive. I will let you know what I think when I compare it to the 914's acceleration. |
Get one of these http://www.gtechpro.com/gtechpro_whatcanitdo.html and measure your acceleration and hp directly.

Here's the bottom line (assuming stock 180hp CIS 3.0): WRX power to weight ratio: 13.5:1 914-6 3.0 power to weight: 13.3:1 914-6 3.0 torque: 202 ft/lb WRX torque: 217 ft/lb (but remember, 914 weighs 600-700lb less) If the WRX is faster than the 914, then THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE 914. Either it's worn out, poorly tuned, or broken. I'm not trying to be a jerk - I'm just saying that these two cars should have virtually identical straight-line performance unless one of them has a problem. Your car won't be warp-speed fast - but it should be Mustang GT fast already (see my previous posts). If it is really in top shape, and that just isn't enough then you could really wake it up by giving it the 3 C's. (compression/carbs/cams). With new pistons/cams/carbs that 180hp 3.0 should be good for 250hp. That should keep you happy for a while. ;) |
Alfred
Believe it or not when I bought the car it had one in it. When the po asked if I wanted it, I let him keep it. |
Tho I don't know what ya'll mean by "fast" or "scary fast" here's one measure. A couple of national level AX drivers having at it.
My 914 vs an STI Subbie. The Subbie is box stock. 1m XSS 1 Tom Kotzian 01 Corvette Z06 47.695 2m FP 41 Doug Skinner 74 Porsche 914/6 47.876 3 AM 7 Neal Stanley 48.327 4m FRUN 95 Tom Kotzian 04 Subaru STi 49.094 My car don't scare me none. Is it "fast"? |
I dunno. . . my 914 was really fast as it fell from the back of that C-130. The stop sorta sucked, though.
|
My teener was R E A L fast last night when the throttle spring broke:eek: pegged at 7K when shifting from 2nd to 3rd:eek:  it's amazing how it seems like the engine is screaming for so long before you can decide "WHAT TO DO" when it's only 1 or 2 seconds before you turn the key off. I had enough speed built up going down a slight incline that I coasted a little over 2 miles. Within a 1/2 mile of my house. Was able to re-bend the end of the spring & get on my way.
This is the best reason for a rev limiter. bruce |
Bah! I worry about passing the furniture truck with my 1.7, and you guys are concerned about a couple ponies over 100..............You guys are all frickin' mad, MAD I tell you.
