916 shifter source?
I was looking through the AA catalog (a pox on me if I must order anything that does not come from Pelican) and I saw a 916 shifter.
Anyone know how they put that kit together? It looks kinda like a Wevo shifter with some shift rods. -Rich |

Did the oval-shaped piece that goes on the side of the tranny have the word "VELLIOS" on it somewhere? If so, then it is George Vellios' 916 tranny kit.
Vellios makes a good number of 914-6 conversion parts, including this kit. He's out of Southern Cal somewhere, does a very small volume of business. His parts tend to be very expensive and very high quality. Rumor has it (I've never driven one myself) that the shift quality on a Vellios 916 is somewhere between a tail-shifter and a side-shifter 914 tranny. If you're interested, and have the big $$ to spend, I would give Tom a call and ask him if he can get the kit. Remember, this is just a kit to fit the shift linkage onto a 915 tranny. You supply the tranny, have the ring and pinion flipped, deal with all the other mounting issues, the clutch, etc... We're talking pretty big bucks here. --DD |

Yup, Yup, Yup, Vellios is bucks. I have my Vellios trans due in next week. LSD and all :-).
I am actually talking about the shifter in the car. Wevo makes a setup for the 911 and I heard it was about $1500, but without the proper linkage its no good in a 914. Anyone seen one o' these? |

Vellios make a conversion kit for the 915 trans to fit into a 914. He has his own cast tail piece with 914 tranny "ears" so it a bolt in conversion and custom rods to make a 915 trans have the same shifting as a 914 side shifter. The clutch cable mounts are also in the same place as the 914 clutch mounts.
He also has race oiling pumps for the trans but I did not opt for that. He is the one to make the 911 rear hubs for the 914. After cutting and welding a Vellios rear hub to the 914 trailing arm you are ready to bolt in 911 vented brakes, bearings, Ebrake and stuff. -Rich |

Its I side shifter alrighty, the tail cone looks just like a 914 tail cone with the work VELLIOS cast into in. The shaft for the shifter is swaped out. Its a huge cost to tool for it but he seems to do a good buisness with it.
The 916 and the 914/6 sportomatic have the same type of mods from the factory. AA sells his kit and on another page a shifter w/linkage for a "916" trans for inside the car. It's not a Vellios product and I cant find out what it is. My previous purchases with AA were less than stellar. Anyone? -Rich |

Ive seen a cable type shifter in a 914/6 GT. Is this a factory deal or just a mod that works? I saw it on the Patrick motorsports website of their GT restoration.
Anyone know of this install? [This message has been edited by Gruppe5 (edited 12-05-1999).] |

Yes, I saw that picture also. Its a race setup that would fit your needs but any cable shifter would work really. The problem is that any cable shifter puts in a great deal of slop into the shifting. All the V8 people I ever heard from said the shifting was worse than the tail shifting.
The AA shifter is different. it looks like it bolts to the floor instead of the channel and uses rods. This would be the preferred way to go. If only AA were a bit more...well..you know. |
