LOOKING FOR HELP
HELLO PEOPLE!!! I NEED HELP LOCATING A PROBLEM. I DON'T LIKE GOING TO A MECHANICS AND TELL THEM THAT. PERHAPS SOME OF YOU CAN HELP. WHEN I TURN MY (914-4 1970) ON, WHITE EXHAUST COMES OUT FROM THE PIPE. IT DOES NOT HAPPEN ALL THE TIME. WHEN IT DOES, IT IS LIKE A HUGE CLOUD. WHEN THE CLOUD DISSAPEARS IT KEEPS SHOOTING THE WHITE EKHAUST FOR ABOUT 15 SECONDS THEN IT STOPS AND ENGINE RUNS FINE. THE WHITE EXHAUST DOES NOT SMELL BAD SO I ASSUME IT IS NOT THE OIL.
I AM NEW AT THIS 914 STUFF. I AM LOOKING TO TROUBLESHOOT THE PROBLEM THANKS IN ADVANCE |

it means that it is cold outside, and that you have too strong of a fuel mixture.

Carb'ed 914s (and other cars) will often do this if you step on the gas to start them when cold, which you have to do since they don't have chokes.
If it is not carbed, how are the emissions? (do they check that in your state?) If it is running fine, not using oil, emissions are fine (i.e. mixture okay), then get on with driving it would be my advice. (Look at the plugs for a cheap and quick view of the state of your mixture). Blue smoke is usally oil, white is water. But the 914's air-cooled? Well for some reason (I live in Miami it rains EVERY DAY) my 2.0L has a proplem with collecting water in the bottom of the air distributor. After hurricane Irene there was about 1/4" of water and the air filter was so wet, after a week it started to grow mold!!! What I've done is to dry out the water as best I can by removing the throttle body and using paper towels (never use a rag, if you forget a rag in there, or a peice comes off it can bend the valves) then start the car (sometimes I need starting fluid). Lots-o-white-smoke at first then it trails off to a mist.
Next time you have this problem remove the air filter and see if there is water inside the air intake. If it is dry then the mixture issue that others metioned should be checked. BTW mine is a 2.0L 1975 stock D-Jet. I didn't have a rain tray thanks to the DPO, now things may have changed. We'll find out next hurricane season. |
