Cool Blondie's back!!!

I just picked up the Blond's engine, and boy was it heavy....

Wow! It looks so pretty! Nikasil cylinder's nestled between aluminum heads and magnesium case.

Basic things done:

Replaced crank and rods with 2.7 crank and rods (Stroked)
Upgraded the 2.2T P&Cs to 2.7 RS P&Cs
Upgraded the T cams to S cams
Piston squirters installed
heads redone, new valves and valve guides
Heads ported
Intake manifold ported
Casesavers installed

With the carbs setup right, this engine should put out 210 hp, up from the 140 hp is was previously producing.

Now where was that limited slip differential.......

James

Is that the crankshaft next to it? How is it going to run without that? It sure looks pretty.

Fortunately, that is the old crank. Coming to an Ebay auction soon.

Yep. It just needs a little sheetmetal, a couple of carbs, oil cooler, oil lines, generator and distributor....

Really won't take to long to put it back together.

Motorwerks in Downtown San Diego.

Costs: for EVERYTHING, about $6000.

It was about $2700 in Labor and $3300 in materials. P&C's were only $1700 (RS Spec 2.7) Brand new Factory Original cam shafts $595. OEM valves $320.

The Heads received a lot of work. Case had to be machined to take the larger cylinders. Piston Squirters installed. Most of the threaded holes changes to case savers.

Basically, we did the right things to strengthen the case, and make it breathe.

It looks like you made it to TJ to get the work started on the car?? I was off racing when you called my office so that is why I never got back to you.. Nice picture and I was wondering if the carbs are going to be overhauled too?

Carbs are a question mark. The cost of re-jetting, etc, I may be better off selling my carbs on ebay and buying a set of PMO's

Seriously considering this!

I don't. PITA to fit the pump correctly on an engine that didn't come with it originally. The left side cam blanks are different, the left cam tower is different, plus the anciliary stuff....

Plus getting a system that's in good shape will likely cost more than a set of PMOs.

To run MFI he'd need to have the right MFI cam on one side with drive pulley installed. That kind of thing needs to be thought of BEFORE the engine rebuild.

Also getting to the adjustments would be a pain, and good luck finding a mechanic who knows anything about tuning MFI and is willing to work on it in a 914!

If I'm not mistaken - which I might be - the left side S cam should come with the threads for an MFI pulley ... if the cams are factory between 69-72 or 3. All that's needed from there is the removal of the left side cam-tower plug and the installation of the pulley. You also have to cut out part of the rear sheetmetal for the pump belt ... but it's all worthwhile.

And speaking from personal experience, the only time adjustments are a pain is when you've gotta make 'em. If you do it right the first time, MFI is ultimately trouble free.

To boot, considering my dad's an MFI guru and I own a 914-6 with MFI, I don't think he would be opposed to working on Red Beard's car for him

Come to the dark side ... you are powerless against the forces of the dark side
