To keep the oil from falling out of that ~3" diameter hole in the bottom of the motor?
To cover up an inspection hole? (That may have been used on the Bus or another Type IV application...) To provide a place to mount the oil temp sender? Other? --DD

That location was used for a slip in crankcase heater for super cold climates..........the heater slid inside the case@! I have never seen one up close!

It's diifferent. It's actually a big o-ring. Don't over tighten the bolts to the plate. It will bend.

Thanks everybody. I just ordered 2 from PP. I need to install a oil temp sender so I thought I'd better have a new seal.
