914 tall gears

Hi all
I have a 72 914 with a 5.0L SBC. It has the 901 sideshift tranny. I have heard of people putting a taller gear on 5th, to decrease the 3200 RPM cruise speed to around 2400. Does anyone know anything about this? How difficult, where to get this gear? I have a guy who would be willing to do this for me but he has never heard of it. How can I determine my current final drive ratio?
Thanks
mark

Oh yeah, I think that I want to go with the "h" setup. I have read a few articles but I am confused. I have an ols tailshifter tranny, can I use any of the gears from it (invert 3rd)
thanks
I think I confused myself some more

H is not in the tranny. The 914 eary and late trannies have the same gearing. OTTO's has gears. Yes, you want an "H" set of gears, setup for 3rd, but you install it in 5th.

Is there any machine work? Do I simply reverse the gears? Should the gears be turned around on the shaft? What amount of time would it take a competent mechanic? I had one guy quote me 8 hrs.
Thx

8 hrs to rebuild the tranny and install the gear is about right.

If you are doing a tranny for a V8, do not skimp on the rebuild.
