Mounting a later style engine mount bar on a '71/4

In cars with the later style mount bar, are the mount points on the chassis different (i.e. a solid mount point) or do they also have mounts similar to those on the early cars? The reason I ask is because I have just mounted a newer style mount bar to my car while doing a sideshift conversion to my '71 - 4. Now, when I jack the car up via the mount bar like I did with the old bar, the bar has also of "give" to it, and it starts to twist (unfortunately I'm at work, so I don't have any pictures). I'm guessing that if the later style cars maintain the same type of mount, that my mounts are shot and should be replaced (if this is the case, does anyone have a set they'd let go inexpensively? I'm not above begging ). And if they are indeed different, is there a recommended upgrade to the old style motor mounts to accomodate the new motor mount bar? Thanks for your help.

Same bar, same mounts, sounds like your mounts are.. Giving? Twisting?

Is the action like a gummi bear, instead of a rubber ball?

Some guys swap out 911 sport mounts for tranny and motor.

I do understand that there should be some give, but it just seemed like they were giving alot. While jacking from the middle to place jack stands at either end like I did with the old bar, the mounts would give and allow the bar to bend to what looked like an unsafe angle to put stands under.

Does anyone have any pics handy of what everything is supposed to look like? It's time for me to grab a new shop manual, since mine only covers '70-'72.

The late bar needs to be solidly mounted to the chassis at the outer ends. The late cars use solid metal mounts there. They have rubber mounts where the engine mounts to the bar instead.

They also have different brackets mounting those inner rubber mounts to the engine. Use all the later parts, don't mix-and-match.

If you use the early rubber outer mounts, the engine will sag far enough that you won't be able to select several gears.

Ok, that makes sense then. Anyone know where I might find those solid metal mounts that Dave is referring to? On all the parts sites I see the early rubber outer mounts and the later style mounts for the later style bar. I should have everything else, but here's the list of items I have so far, just to make sure:

* side shift tranny
* side shift linkage, from shift lever to tranny
* late style engine mount bar
* late style engine mounts (hockey puck looking kind)
* bracket to mount new mounts to new mount bar.
* new bushings, including proper firewall bushing.

Other than the solid metal mounts, does that seem to be everything?

While I have your eyes, I wanted to get some opinions about the feasibility of a scheme to remove one of the cone set screws. The head of the screw at the end of the linkage is stuck, and is starting to strip. Rather than drilling it out and most likely ruining the rear linkage bar, I thought that sacrificing a allen wrench and attempting the JB Weld the wrench into the head, let it set for however long it specifies to totally cure, and try to get a pair of vice grips or something on it to get it out of there. Anyone tried anything similar to this?

Nope... A 20 foot walk, when you've got a stuffed-up head and a fever, is quite the little trek!


...I think the outer mounting bits are still available new. Nobody lists them because they are not "maintenance items" that wear out the way that the rubber mounts do. Try calling 888-280-7799 and talking to our friendly Sales staff!

Used is likely going to be cheaper, of course...
