Hell Yeeaaaahhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just drove my fully funtioning '73 1.7 last night and all I have to say is HELL YEEEEAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!. It was worth the work, wait and money. Picked up from the so-called local 914 expert and drove the crap out of it. He did a basic tune up and inspected it and all that stuff. One thing though. It idles at about 2000 rpm. He says its supposed to, but I think hes full of crap. 1200 or 1500 sounds about right, tell me I'm wrong please. If Im not than that guy just lost any of my future bidness.

You are both wrong, it should idle around 900.

Is there and easy way to remedy this. With a carburator you can turn the idle screw down, does the fuel injection system have something similiar? Or could it be the timing? Or something more serious? Or all or none of the above?

Yup, the fuel injection does have an idle screw near the throttle body that faces upward (at least on my D-jet). Check the Haynes manual. If the tune-up dialed in the timing, dwell, mixture etc., the idle screw should work; otherwise something else might be up.

I turned down the idle screw, in fact all the way and it brought it down to about 1200. I dont know, anyone think I give the distributor cap a turn and not mess anything up?

I had a problem an auxiliary air regulator that seemed to cause the same effect, had it replace.

AAR is bad

Idle Mixture too rich

Either of these conditions (one of the AAR failure modes) makes it impossible to close the idle screw to 950rpm, if it's the AAR, it will drive you insane when you try to subvert repair, an endless loop of idle, and mixture settings..

Your high idle is a vacuum leak...Aux air, PCV, hoses, seal at the throttle body, manifold gaskets air cleaner ....they all can leak. one at a time or all at once... I would double check everything the mechanic (expert) did especially "all that stuff". 2000 rpm...it is supposed to???? that was his best answer? He is a thief... tell him I said so. I am tired of half ass mechanics. They deserve less than half thier hourly rate!!!! no wait. If they can't fix it then tough S. they should get nothing and replace thier Expert reputation with no talent, dumb ass mechanic that should strip parts in the local junk yard! ( rant over)

BTW. You are the best mechanic for the car....yes you. There is nothing on the car that you, a living breathing human can't handle.

I challenge you in front of all ... educate thy self, start small and gain confindence, be smart and pateint and fix it yourself... ANd of course ask questions here...

PS. Drove mine to work today...50 miles round trip. top speed 95mph. Two thumbs up...one from a guy in a boxster hell yeah. the car is just plan fun.

Norustscott, If I wasnt a better person I would go kick that guys ass. He robbed me.....plain and simple. Not for too much, but he did basically jack ***** and charged me for it. Oh well, now I know. You are right. If I want this thing done right Iam going to have to hit the manual and do it myself. Im poor so I've had to work on alot of cars myself, I just know jack about Porsches. Most of that sounds fairly simple, except for the manifold gasket.

I think most of us began this way. I know I did and was ripped by the first expert mechanic for $300+
That's when I dove in head first with the Haynes manual and all the other manuals that came later. Scott said it right. Besides, if you doit yerself it's more fun to drive cuz you know what you got. Now... get out there & find all dem vacuum leaks and start by replacing all the vacuum hoses they're located in the cheap seats!

I agree fully with Scott half the fun of my car is learning how it do everything myself. It make the drives all the more interesting.

Yeah that was my original plan, do everything myself, and I did do a fair amount just to get it funtioning to the point I could drive it a few miles to that idiots shop, I just got impatient wanting to drive it. Well I guess its time to go back to plan A. My wife will just have to understand she has been replaced for a little while.

Best part is, you will never have to work on it alone.
We will all be there to help even if it's just with internet advice and BTDTs.

Yeah I gotta say Sammy, THIS SITE ROCKS. The first couple of weeks I had this car I was convinced I had the last 914 on Earth and everyone was allergic to them or something. Then it dawned on me that there is this thing called the internet and I found you guys. I really appreciate any and all the help I have received here. Its saved me alot of time and money already. Its also nice to see that there are other crazy people out there that love these mid engined jewels.
