Rust under rocker

I took off the rocker panel and this is what I found! How serious does this appear to be compared to others you all have seen?

Ouch! The pic nearer the door hinge is not structural, the other area is where the jack plate was.....914s all tend to get some rot in the jack plate but yours has rotted right through. If these areas have rotted there's a good chance that there is a lot of rot lurking elsewhere too. Good news is repair panels are available for all the bits you've posted.

I had very similar rust to yours and ened up with this....


The car was a free 73 2.0 so I could justify doing the work.

Be carefull doing a bunch of welding, the car can shrink, making it difficult to open/close the doors. Braces may be installed to keep the door gaps correct.

After cutting and before welding the body guy braced it.
Diagonals from side to side and across the doors.

install the targa top, open the door, stand on the longitudinal and jump up and down. observe top gap movement. If teh rust has structurally compromised the car, the top will move. If teh car is solid, it will not. I htink you should be at least 160 lbs to perform this test. dont be afraid to jump hard.

The longitudinal being the piece running side to side just in fron of the seats??

no. the longitudinal runs length-wise, under teh door opening. The test is to observe chassis flex along the side of teh car. Do the passenger's side first.
