1.8 Big Bore..? Or?
okay here it is-
What I have to work with- 70 914, 1.8 EA case with dual 40 Dell's. Stock H/E, Monza Exhaust. I plan on tearing it down this winter to at least install a decent cam and maybe do what else I can for some extra power. Whats affordable out there that gets me up a notch and where do I get it? I can/will do all the work myself - have contacts who can open up case and heads if needed. I'd like to use all the components (heads, exhaust, manifolds...heat exchangers, etc..) I have because they all fit well and are good working parts. I dont want to have to search for 2 liter h/e, exhaust, manifolds, and then match it all to the engine etc etc... Is there a relaible slip in big bore, if not whats safe in oversize and will it fit a 1.8 case w/ what mods? Counterbalanced crank? Lightened flywheel? Thanks all! Robert O wash state p.s. Is there a monthly 914 breakfast / get together in seattle...? |

Steve Stromberg at Otto's has a couple of sets of 100mm P/C sets that may work for you. Otherwise, you could go with 96's and a lightened flywheel with a new cam and lifters and get some very nice performance out of it. The deal from Otto's is going to be hard to beat at $300.00 a set.

There's a lot of good information at http://aircooled.net . Make a selection and read the info that pops up. The forged, 103 & 105 mm Type 4 pistons and cylinders go for $600 and $700 respectively and the 96mm pistons and cylinders go for $600. Shop around for the best prices.

The 103s and 105s don't seem to hold up very well. They are also very much not slip-ins. I'm not sure about the 100s, but the 96es are slip-in on the 1.8 engines.
Exhaust--if you need heat, then 2.0 SSIs is it. Period. If you don't need heat, http://www.kerryhunterenterprise.com , http://www.smartcart.com/Paragon/cgi/display.cgi?item_num=914Headers, and http://www.tangerineracing.com offer real headers that actually work. I have listed them in increasing order of both price and reputed performance. None of them are cheap. Lightened flywheel, yes. Always good to free up a bit of power and to help the engine spin up and down faster. Don't go super light on a street engine. Counterweighted crank, IMHO, no. Not worth it for a street car. If you do go C/W, then seriously consider a more custom crank with longer throws (e.g., 78mm) and matching rods to give you more displacement. You can go with larger valves, though that requires a good machine shop. Cam selection will be important as well. The folks on the "Type 4um" on http://www.shoptalkforums.com talk about engine configurations a lot. --DD
