Why is my car stalling?
Hello All,
It's been a long time since I have posted here, and you have helped alot in the past. My car is a '73 1.7L 914, with stock fuel injection. As I live in the Chicago area, it is only driven in the summertime. The car has always performed really well, until just recently. Last week I was going to take it out for it's final drive of the year. It started and idled for about two minutes, then started to stall. I was able to keep it going by pressing and releasing the gas pedal for about one minute. It kept trying to stall out, and finally did. I tried starting it again, but it just would not keep running, until finally it would not start again. I let it set overnight and the same scenario happened again. I know the gas tank is not rusted, as when I purchased the car I had it cleaned and coated on the inside. I even replaced the metal screen. The fuel filter has only a couple thousand miles on it. There is about a quarter tank of gas in the car. I replaced the points and condenser a few years ago with an electronic ignition unit. Last year one of the wires under the rotor in the distrbutor had the insulation worn off, and the wire was shorting out causing the car to not start. The company that made ignition unit replaced the whole unit free of charge. ( The kit now comes with a small washer to fit on the distrbutor shaft to raise the rotating disc to keep it away from the wires.) I checked this ignition unit and it appears to be alright. The only thing I can think of is that the gas in the car may have moisture in it, and may be bad. Although I put some "Heat" in the gas to remove any moisture a few days ago, and the problem still exits. Before I drain all the gas and replace the fuel filter ( I just received a new fuel filter from Pelican in the mail ), I would appreciate any additional ideas you all could suggest I check. Thanks in advance for your replies. ![]() |

Check all of the wires and hoses in the engine bay. Make sure nothing is unplugged, or cracked, or even old and brittle.
