Getting into a locked out trunk
Just when i thought i had everything getting about perfect, my trunk lock broke...how do you get into it? I am guessing that i have to compress the spring more and unscrew the trunk at the points in the engine compartment?
Thanks in advance, Paul |

I think there is an article on this site that explains how to do it? Good luck.

You have to reach into the trunk with a socket and extensions (a LOT of extensions!) and unbolt the latch from the body. You either do this through the plastic cups where the top's latches sit, or you remove the bolts that hold the rear decklid onto the hinges (there are two on each side) and get to it that way.
Not fun. --DD |

Just an idea, not tried myself, but ...
Since the trunk release works by pressing straight in on the latch from the back of the car, if you are willing to drill a 1/2" hole in the base of the trunk, directly below the latch, you could then use a long screw driver to depress the latch. A 1/2" rubber plug would then seal the hole. I also remember reading something once about removing the bumper and finding a hole back there that works for this purpose. |

Before you start pulling things apart, try pushing the release button very hard, holding it in, and then shake the trunk lid as you try and open it. I had a rear reflector on the back of my 914 with the cable actuated release. When I removed the reflector, I left the cable system and removed the actuator that is attached to the back of the lock assembly (what is most likely broken on your car). I wanted it to look stock, but have the security of only being able to unlock it from inside. To my suprise, even with the actuator removed I was able to push the button very hard and open the rear lid.
Just a thought... -Scott S |

THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH. I just got around to trying to get into my trunk. I did have to push really hard(jam it in with my thumb) but it did pop open. Now all I have to do is find where I put that replacement piece. Kind of funny, I had bought the replacement so this wouldn't happen, saw that the piece looked exactly like what I had bought and decided to not put it on yet. I definitely should have!!! Anyways, I got it opened and will be replacing that piece soon. Thanks a lot, Paul |

Just a thought Paul, when we had trouble with the trunk latch on our 914, I bought both upper and lower pieces from Pelican and replaced them both and it has worked like new (it should) ever since. I had to be careful in adjusting the upper part since it is easy to get it set so there is too much tension on the mechanism and can cause it to jam and you have to push so hard on the button it can break the lower mechanism. Check the rubber bumpers at each corner of the trunk to make sure they aren't too high too.
