914 inserts in a 911 strut assembly?

Hi, I'm looking to do a 5-lug conversion. I can get a front strut assembly with hub, rotor, caliper but no insert. Will my 914 inserts fit in a 911 strut assembly?

Should be fine.. I've done it with early struts...the 69-73 T type..

Good luck..

Kind regards

Hmmm.... I didn't think that worked!

Note that there are several kinds of 911 inserts, and they are not easily interchangeable. The three OEM inserts I know of offhand are Boge, Bilstein, and Koni. The struts or part of the struts have different colors (black for Boge, green for Bilstein, I forget what for Koni), and some specific ones interchange with others but others do not. I have that information at home, but will likely be unable to post until next year some time. And will probably forget by then.... (Duuuuhhh.)

That's just in the 911 world. I think 914 inserts are all interchangeable with each other, but I didn't realize that they were with some 911 struts.

Quite correct by my undertstanding too, Dave...

The struts I used were the Boge's, the inserts the Armstrong's.

Armstrong list the same part number( or did before they went west).

Koni list differnet numbers I recall.. bu this is because they are fussy about valving for the vehicle weight and spring rate...

I believe the physical dimensions are the same...

Kind regards
David.

Yup, same. But, there may be a collar insert needed to change the insert top diameter. I have one of those. See the KYB that they sell here. Arent they the same for both?

You're talking about a 914 dry cartridge insert for the 911 shock strut tube?

I just did so with mine. BOGE 911 struts. 914 BOGE inserts fit right in with no problems.

I believe I have boge on my 914 now (black). The 911 strut assemblies have the strut housing...just the inserts are missing. The strut/hub/caliper unit I'm looking at are coming off of a 69 911. Does this help?

Or, does anybody have a complete 911 strut unit available with struts/calipers/rotors etc. so I can just remove the 914 and put in the 911 unit?

I'm guessing early 911 might work. Have you tried cross referencing the part numbers? If your inserts are old you might consider upgrading. Do you have the screw on caps for the tubes?

Okay, Koni inserts for '74 911S tubes measure 14-1/2" from rounded bottom to base of rubber rod gasket at top. Koni tubes and inserts are tapered, original '74 2.0 914 tubes aren't. The exterior measurements of both tubes appear to be the same otherwise. They may fit, but I don't know if they are intended to be compatible. Hope this helps.

Hello, No Substitute.

I believe that the Koni strut as used on the S and optional on others is different from the T strut and uses a different Koni cartridge.

So the 914 /911T insert may well have some differences from the numbers you have kindly provided...I do not know for sure though..

Kind regards
David

Not sure why you would go with 3" struts instead of 3.5" your not picking up much more brake the 3". If you go with some like 69 S struts or SC then you will be able to use a lot more brake combinations. With these you can use Koni sports both are for sale.

Hi David, I think you may be right, but I'm not certain. The Koni struts are 3.5's, whereas the original 914's are 3 inch bolt spacing.
MJH, are the yellow inserts gas Koni?

Yes, their brand new and fit in the Koni S struts, you have to get the right top with the threads and they work.

Just a thought, as I recall Koni's in Koni's, Bilstien's in Bilstien's, and anything in Boge's. I also seem to recall that some of the 911 inserts had a longer threaded end on the piston (upper mount) and if used in the 914 they would dimple the front trunk when closed the first time. I can't remember for sure.

No, not anything in Boges. The shocks are different. I have Boge 3,5 on my 914 and 3.5 Koni on my 911 with S alloy calipers on both cars. The inserts do not swap either way.

And I had no problem wiht the threads on my 914 hitting the hood. Maybe that's Koni Sports which I have but not installed in the 914 yet.

FWIW: My 914 Boge inserts in my 911 struts do fit the 914 without hitting the hood.

I don't know if the same would be true with 911 boge inserts in the 914 struts. I know they fit, but I don't know if they stick up higher
