Intake Manifold Modifications??

Has anyone ever encountered a situation where the intake manifolds would need to be modified in order to work? I am looking at a pair of 40mmIDF Webers for my 73 replacing the single solex that was on it. The gentleman selling mentioned possible mods...for $200 should I go for it or beware??

The only reason you would modify a 914 manifold for webers would be to fit a 1.7/1.8 manifold on a 2.0, or vice versa. The mod is simply redrilling a few holes...

I can tell you more if you tell me what your motor is and what the webers came off of...

Like Mike said, the only "mod" to a carb manifold is the dilling of a center hole for a 2.0L or two holes for a 1.7/1.8 Most of the manifolds I've seen (O.K. not a lot maybe 10??) have both bolt patterns in them. The Type -I bolt/port configuration is completely different, and if that is what they came from you need new manifolds.

To clearify, the carbs should come with 1.some sort of linkage, a high quality crossbar linkage is expensive (look at the Pelican performance section or CB performance) I think they run about $150-200 (???) for the whole set-up. Cheaper ones are availible but the sycronization of the carbs relies on a good linkage. 2.The should also come with two manifolds. Modifing a single carb manifold into a duel system is possible (never heard of it, but it could be done with lot-o-work) but it wouls be much easier to just buy cast manifolds. They will flow better, mount the carbs in proper relationship to one another, and won't leak. 3.You also need the asorted fuel line, pressure regulator, extra jets, and filter assemblies.

I saw duel 40's for sale at the Stoddard swap meet for around $200 with air clearers and manifolds, but they were for a 912 motor. The guy was a know racer and said that the carbs came off his 912 so he could compete in a stock class that required the stock Solex and were in good runing condition.

Unless those 40's are in near new shape or you live a in a secluded area look around for a better price. My $.02, local exchange rate may vary.

Ask me how I caught my distributor on fire. Go ahead, I dare you.

I decided that my 1.8L engine harness (the one the oil sender, igniton coil, back-up lights go to, not the FI harness) was in bad shape from a PO carb conversion. Thinking that unsoldering the connectors inside the black plug and soldering on new wire was a good idea I did just that. However...

Upon puting the pins back in their respective slots I assumed that I was paying attention and put all the pins back in the right place. Well, I didn't, I put +12v to the neg side of the coil and fried (I mean red hot, melted the wire, fried) the points, condensor, and melted plastic from the rotor into the dizzy.

There ain't nothing like doing the same job twice. Wiring diagrams are a good thing to use.

mikez...I almost forgot, I am looking to use them on my 73 1.7L however I am not sure exactly what they came off of.

JP thanks a bunch..the linkage was not included so I think I may let this one go and look elsewhere.

So from what you guys said, if it was suggested to modify the intakes for the 1.7L then they were probably on a 2L assuming the guy knows what he was talking about?
Once again....I think I will keep looking.

Who or Where would you recomend purchasing new 40mmIDF Webbers..I noticed Pelican doesn't really cater towards a carb setup.

CB Performance has carbs as well as PMO...CB is on the net and reasonable-ish...PMO is a pain but has the best stock....they are in LA. 310-393-5423.

actually 200 for a pair of good webers 40 idf is a very good deal, you don't have to buy the most expensive linkage there are very good ones for 70 dollars and intake manifolds for 35.00 each new! I will check on that I must have the info somewhere.
