Harness Mounts
Hi Everyone-
I stated in an earlier post that I am reworking my 914 for Drivers Ed events, and then as I improve, some PCA club events. Even though my car is a 4 cyl, I am going after the appearance of the 914-6 GT. I am just about finished. All that is really remaining is the interior. I have changed the doors to the GT (straps to open, Fiat door pulls, smooth vinyl, exposed screws), re-did the dash with the correct temp, pressure guage (with the gas guage moved to where the radio should be)I have a line on the seats, and the roll bar should be in next week.(*phew*) After all of that - does anybody have a line on the firewall brackets that holds the shoulder harness? They are a small, squared off "u" bracket that looks like a drawer pull. Any help is greatly appreciated! Scott S |

I checked with a couple of people here in San Diego and they said the brackets aren't available. I don't have the rule books here at work, but I think both the PCA and SCCA competition rule books say to use the factory suppplied hardware with a steel plate to strengthen the bolt hole area. The SCCA get very technical about the belt angles, distance between bolts and even fastener strength rating. The vintage look is nice, but I would go with the modern method of hooking them up for safety. Since you mentioned a roll bar/cage the rule books are also very technical in how they should be made. Good luck.

What's wrong with using the harness bar that bolts to the stock seat belt mounts behind your head?

I don't think I can use a harness bar with a roll bar (Autopower - without the cross brace, just an open hoop with ears and doorbars). Is it ok to use both?

The Autopower rollbar on my race 914 covers the area where the cross bar would bolt, so it could not be used. I wouls till opt for two bolts through the rear bulkhaead at the appropriate locations. As I noted earlier, I would install the bar/belts/etc to the most restrictive set of regs which seem to be the SCCA general competition rules (GCRs) and then you wouldn't have to do it over at a later date. I have that problem now since the previous owner did autocross/timetrials and some POC club racing, but had no intentions of doing PCA or SCCA road racing so I have a lot of work to do to make the car into a legal road racer. Would this have kept me from buying the car, hell no as it goes like stink and it is a blast to worry those 911s on a time trial causing them to spin....One last thought, is there a race prep shop near you? They can be super helpful as they generally know what is required of all sanctioning bodies.

I have a Safety Devices cage (the 8 point)and a harness bar. It is not legal in PCA (or SCCA I think) to mount the harnesses to the harness bar. It is meant to control the angle of the belts, not to mount them. My belts are mounted to the floor and then loop over the bar. This keeps the angle of the belts as the approach your shoulder in spec. If the angle is too low, ie you mount directly to the floor and then loop over your shoulder, you can compress you spine in a crash.
