Temp Sensor

The engine in my car is from a 74 that only had the idiot lights. The engine is in a 73 chasis with a stock temp gauge. Any ways the gauge reads red when on the high way. I'm wondering if I am running hot or have the wrong sending unit. I hope it's just the sending unit. But i'll probably put a external oil cooler any ways for safe measure.
Thanks! Josh

Before making any changes, use a temperature probe to accurately measure the oil temp. The stock gauges are not very precise (they have no numbers!) and you could have a bad or mismatched sending unit. A temperature probe will quickly tell you if the problem is with your gauge/sender or if the engine is running too warm.
