To long block or not, that is the question

I need a new motor, I live in Seattle home of
the inflated consumer price index. I seem to
getting quotes of around 4k to rebuild my 2.0
Some of these don't mention things like new
cylinders and pistons not to mention a new cam. I have found a guy on the Pelican parts forum named Alan Bishop who has
rebuilt long blocks. He says he has 20+ years experience and the engines have a 1 year warranty. I can get 140hp for 2950
110hp for 2750
95hp for 2500.
I have carbs on the car now and would like
a hydraulic lifter cam.
Is anyone on the forum from Washington and can they recommend someone ?.

Why do you want a hydraulic lifter cam?
You mignt not have to adjust the valves but you will lose significant RPM potential which = HP. Poesche did not even give them a second thought and VW used them in the bus engines which were all about torque not HP. Of course if you want your 914( you are looking for a 2.0 rebuild for a 914 not a bus right?) to drive like a bus; then you could get a bus motor for reel cheep even in Seatle!

I want the cam because it was recommended. I want to cut the maintence tasks down if possible. Pointless ignition...etc.
My stock 2.0 rev's quite happily to 6 grand
this is enough for me. I want tractable power. If a mild cam with hydraulic lifters
compromises that I might have to reconsider.

As far as Marc Peters that is where the 4 grand came from. I suspect the price is influenced by the 67 page color brochure that
Paul Weir sends out to your home. If you have
personel knowlage of their work I would love to hear about it.

Hi Neal,

Keep us posted on what you find and if you like them. I'm over in Port Townsend which means there is only one old retired German who will even look at an aircooled engine.

Even though my 75 1.8 runs like a top and only has 80K on it, I certainly think about a few extra horses at some point in the future.

Neal, I agree with Tom on using Jerry @ NWCR! I just picked up my 2.1L 120HP approx motor from him yesterday. Jerry has raced/built motors for years and has lots of good ideas on how to build em! I provided lots of the parts but he did all the custom head, machining, balancing and assembly. Look at the 914 lite page for more info on Jerry.
