activated charcoal canister
Am trying to rebuild a 1974 914-4. Goit most of the car done. Working on the engine. Is the activated charcoal canister (ACC) required and if it is required where is one available?

If you're subjected to emissions testing in your area it's definitely required as part of the emissions control system. You'll fail the test without it. Otherwise you can probably do without it.
If you really need/want one try searching for one here on Pelican's Classifieds, Ebay, or www.914club.com Classifieds. You're bound to find one. Shouldn't cost much either. Joel

Just to clarify - you'll only fail the visual check if that's one of the items they look for. It won't cause the exhaust emissions to fail if it's missing or not hooked up.

Early 74s had them up on top of the gas tank near the brake fluid reservoir. Later 74s had them in the engine bay, either hanging off the battery tray or on the firewall or on the rear bulkhead.
Pelican might be able to get them new (try 888-280-7799) but used is probably the cheapest bet. Some people just tear them off, so you may be able to pick one up cheap. Try our Parts For Sale BBS and the one over on the 914club (dot-com) website. --DD
