a/c performance report

o.k. finally back on the road with a working a/c cooled 914! after 5 weeks in the shop the correct parts were installed and with some minor changes on the location of the second condensor (horizontally mounted below floor pan vs inside engine compartment).blows ice cold (even sitting stopped in traffic) and no noticable drag on motor when compressor "kicks in".my only comments/complaints are 3 speed blower unit seems as if it should move more air...("top" speed blows like I would expect from the "middle" speed selector and I was "jerked" around by manufacturer after he sent wrong compressor bracket with kit ...and would not send the correcrt part until he was sent his "wrong"part back..a delay of a week and at my expense! As for the product itself ...pricey..but worth it if like myself you have no desire to let car sit as it is too hot to enjoy in the summer. I feel as this is an improvement over trying to retrofit an older unit with all the old technology into a nice car .

What old technology? The only difference between the old units & the new units is that the new ones use a small compressor and a different freon. The reason they have to add a second condensor is that R134 freon is not as effective at removing heat. The old R12 gas works way better than R134. Unfortunately R12 has the side effect of ruining the ozone.

is your 914 a 914-4 or a 914-6? ive heard horror stories about the 4 cylenders running a/c in the heat. so if its a 4 just keep an ear out for the sounds of overheating.

Eat-um-up,

Should not be the case if done properly. I have a 2.0L-4 with A/C - driven every day of summer with no overheating problems (in Phoenix).

Just make sure thermostat is in working order and all sheet metal is in place. Also make sure any cooling air exits are closed up.

Sounds like you got your moneys worth sstine9.

Would love to see the pictures. I can't see how they'd be able to mount a compressor in my six - but I'd sure love to have some cool air.

Wondering on if you've had a chance to snap a few pictures...and see how it's working for you. Thanks

Nathan
