You all know I am not a purist, quite the opposite. I have been waiting to try something new with my car, but I am running out of time. I have a friend that has a whole Mercedes diesel set up and is willing to give it to me as payment for some work I did for him. It is in prime condition. All I would need to do is plumb it, and get the adaptor plate from KEP with the fly wheel. I plan on doing this to the red one in my back yard. Can you say "Torque!" A good side effect is that even if they repeal the 30year smog exemption it wont mater because it will be diesel and wont need smog. I will deffinetly own a one of a kind. Oh ya, the diesel is a TURBO diesel with all of the parts. Man this is gonna be sweet.
What do yall think? Mike

I think you're nuts...cuz everyone I know thinks I'm nuts because I suggest a Diesel 914 awhile back.
I thought about looking at the Rabbit Diesel, I'm not sure how they'll fit. I was thinking of using Biodiesel or Waste Veggie Oil... Sang |

Bio-D all the way. The fry grease thing is great in theory, but it's a big pain to set up in real life. (Two tanks, you have to remember to start on conventional diesel, then switch over after 5 minutes, then switch back 5 minutes before you stop driving... Ugh.)
I don't know how the dimensions of the M-B turbodiesel compare to those of the Type IV or SBC or any of the other common swaps. Worth measuring it all out, so you don't have to cut up the firewall the way the 928-motor guy is. --DD

Yes WVO is a pain because of the switchover needed, but in Sunny California, the warmup time should be minimal and with 2 trunks, you could probably fit the WVO tank in the back, and have the Exhaust help warm it up. Or up front with the new radiator setup. It's nice to have 2 trunks!
also looked into a Toyota MR2 (1st gen) Diesel, but I don't think they imported the Toyota Trucks with 4cyl Diesel back in the 80's I think they had them in Europe. Mike, make measurements...lots of measurements and let us know what you find...us crazy tree hugging campfire dancing weirdos out here in California would like to see a Diesel 914. Sang hmm...I did just pick up a 74 carcass...now I need someone sto drop off a VW Rabbit diesel on my doorstep... |

I'm more about the milage and the dependability. Plus it is definetly unique. I have wanted to do this project for about ten years, but paying for an engine was just to much. Now since the engine is gratis and the car is not worth restoring to original (and esentially gratis as well) it is do able. I will make it fit no matter what. The WVO is way out of my field. Sounds neat though. I think getting the diesels turbo hooked up will actually be the hard part.

I think it is a great idea. I became a diesel enthusiast back when I use to work in the shop at a large ranch that ran the Ram Cummins. Those things would run forever. I have done repairs on just about everything on those trucks except tear into the engine.......cause they never needed it! Day after day they were used to haul these huge gooseneck trailers loaded with tractors all over.
Now ask me about the gas engine trucks they had. They just wouldn't hold up to the use. With any load they would bog down and get terrible mileage. I personally would do a diesel rabbit engine. I have one that wasn't originally turboed. What I used is a callaway exhaust manifold and a welded up injection intake off of a gas engine. With the fuel turned up and with more boost it will leave my 1.7 914 in acceleration and get 45mpg! Just don't look in the rear view cause you'll see a huge cloud of black smoke under heavy acceleration. What I also recommend if using this engine is to get a stud kit. I was having problems once in a while with blown head gaskets and this solved the problem. Hey if you need any measurements let me know I have it on the stand now getting ready for a rebuild.

APRIL FOOLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
However wonderful a diesel 914 would be, this has been a ruse. I appreciate all of your contributions...some of you actually made me wonder about the feasability. I dont doubt that it will be done some day, however.
A little more believable than my olive oil tranny lub of last year.

Yesterday Howard Stern pretended to be thrown off the air, which would've really put a downer on the morning ride to work, I'm glad that was false.
The diesel actually sounds cool for some reason.... Someone should try it just for the hey of it...
