Ign coil wiring

I just rewired my 914 using a harness from a donor car. The 14 I am restoring was a retired race car so there was no harness to begin with. Here is my question, I know I have my coil wired up correct but it gets pretty warm. A little warmer than I'd like. Should there be a full 12v to the coil or has anyone used a ballast type resistor to drop the voltage to the coil to cool it down?? Mopar uses this in their ign systems. ..I know this isn't a mopar...

The stock coil has a ballast resistor built into is. Ditto the replacement "blue" Bosch coil. Not sure what the resistance of it is.
