What's a side shifter worth?
Hi. I just wanted to have an idea of what to pay for a good used 914 side shifter tranny, and linkage?
Thanks, Eddie.

$150-$300 seems to be the typical range on Ebay. Note that if you're converting a tailshifter, you'll also need bushings, a motor mount bar, and the mounts on the ends of the bar.

No more than $250 for a tranny in unknown condition. $100 for a tailshifter.
Figure about $100 for the engine mount bar and the linkage. You will need the conversion bushing at the firewall and a new rear cover. And before you put the tranny into the car, I would open it up and check the bearings and the condition of the wearable parts. James

For converting an earlier car, you will also need the inner motor mounts (attach to the bar), the brackets for those mounts (bolt to the engine), and the outer solid mounts for the bar. Also the entire linkage, from the gear shift lever all the way back to the transmission. You can't really use the early-style parts for any of those when going to a side-shifter.
If you are going to swap in the complete side-shift transmission, you don't have to swap the end covers. (Technically, you don't have to even if you're just swapping in the side-shift parts... But having a disconnected rod poking out of the end cover does look really odd.) --DD

The rear cover - the rear _linkage_ cover made of black ABS...

The previous owner of my tranny paid big money to have all the seals replaced on the tranny but I don't think they changed any of the mechanicals. Either they were OK or he didn't want to spend the $$$. It was not possible to test drive the tranny so I have no clue how or if it is working. dr |

Step 1, drain fluid and see what color it is. i.e. does it have any pretty metal petina?

8 nuts on the rear. 2 on the side. pull off the end cover. engage 5th gear. slide the gear stack out.

Yeah, like James said. If it's out of the car, pulling the gear stack is dead easy. No reason not to do it. You'll have to re-seal the end cover and the intermediate plate, but that's just a matter of buying a tube of Hylomar.
Personally, I'd just put the damned thing in the car and see how good it is. If your existing one is so bad you want to swap it out, how much worse could it be? |

Yes, but you can use the good parts from the old tranny to the new one
