Tranny

I need to replace my mainshaft seal. I had the motor and tranny out last year, but failed to replace it then. Can the tranny be removed by itself? I have no reason to drop the motor again. Haynes manual says no, but when I eyeballed it, it looks like I should be able to do it. It looks like I should be able to support the motor, unbolt the 4 large bolts, the rear mounts and slide it aft and out. Has anybody done this?? Thanks!!

Yup, that's how you do it. Don't forget to tie the half-shafts up and out of the way, and make sure the engine is securely supported. Hydraulic jack can (and do!) sag... Oh, and don't forget that the one bolt holding the transmission onto the engine is accessed from inside the engine bay!!

...Don't forget the tranny ground strap... its not that big of a deal to undo when the trans in pulled out part of the way, just a hole lot easier to deal with before dropping the trans (and remember to connect it afterwards!)

Thanks, Dave and BigD.....I'll try to heed your warnings. I will have the engine supported by jack stands. Just received the seal via Priority Mail from PP, just as promised. I already got my CV joint seals. I also need to replace my driver's side wheel bearing, so that's going to be done while the tranny is out. Wish me luck with that chore!! Any transmission gearbox oil recommended over the others??

Synthetic? I haven't tried redline, but last time i used a sythetic lube in the tranny it leaked like a siv and spun to easily, the syncros couldn't do their job (at least in the 901 box). I use swepco 201, never had any problems. And everyone i know that runs out with the POC on the short track uses it too. But thats my experiance, i'm sure others would agrue differently.

The easiest way i found to remove a trans from a 914 in my garage was to place jack stands under the rear lift points so the car's rear was as high up in the air as i could get it, then place a car jack under the engine just in front of where the tranny and engine meet. Once everything is dissattached from the trans (muffler, wires, starter, CVs, shift linkage, etc), unbolt the tranny mount bolts to the chassis and the two top bolts holding the trans and the motor together, lower the down so the tranny is free from the rear mounting bolts. Then i sit down on the ground with my knees in front of me and feet on the ground and hold the trans with my knees, unbolt the bottom two bolts and pull the trans out. The reason i like it this way is because i can use the car jack to raise/lower the trans/motor while installing/removing the trans. It sounds a lot harder than it really is. Just one way of many ways.

Have fun, Don.
