Question Dizzy drive ?s

Yokay, so I'm putting the distributor in last night, being ever so careful, and aligning the dots on the gears (cam and crank), when I realize that the dizzy drive gear can go in any-which way. Which way is correct I ask? I ask Mr Wilson and Mr Haynes, but all I find is something about 12 degrees, and a blurry picture.
What's the best way to determine it's placement? I know I have to align the rotor/dist housing mark/#1 tdc, but I can't do any of those properly until the drive gear is established correctly.
THANKS IN ADVANCE!
Cheerio

Follow the picture... When the engine is together, and at TDC#1, you put the drive shaft in so that the slot in the top of it is roughly 12 degrees offset (CCW) from straight fore-and-aft. I believe that the slot is offset to the left when it's in the correct orientation... Look at your distributor (line up the rotor with the notch in the body, check the tabs on the drive, set the distributor in roughly correct orientation) to be sure.

Mostly what you're doing is making sure that the distributor body has enough room to get the timing correct. When you index the driveshaft, you are effectively changing the rotation of the whole distributor. If it's off too far, the vacuum advance cannister will hit the fan shroud or the engine tin.

I'm a pro at it now - kept trying different positions on purpose, just to make certain of how it would be if it were a tooth or two off. Turns out that it's really obvious if it was installed wrong, and on page 14, Mr. Wilson has a nice drawing that is exactly as described.
