The early busses (50 to 67, T-1) were like type I (1200, 1500 and 1600 cc) and the mid ones (68 to 79, T-2) were type IV (1700, 1800 and 2000cc) and later (79 on, T-3 )they went to diesel and water cooled after that. There are posts here and on the other 914 site at http://www.dgi.net/914/ and they spell out the differences.

The early buses had what were called Type II motors. They were essentially Type I (bug) motors.
The Bus went to Type IV power in 72, and then I think in 1980 they went to the "wasserboxer". That was something of a Type IV motor with water jackets around the cylinders and heads--a strange kind of hybrid... --DD |

You are correct Dave,
I owned a '69 bus while my close friend owned a '71 at the same time. He bragged frequently about his bus because it was one year pre type VI and had first year power brakes. -- Randy |

Yes, '72 was the first year for buses for the type 4 engine as I had one. That was my first time rebuilding a type 4 engine at 100,000 miles. VW used a very soft cam material and they are famous for the cams lobes wearing off (ask me how I know) The dual carbs were great but the engine access was impossible! My 76 914 is a dream to work on compared to that 72 bus!!!! Actually, that bus ran really good after I added some 914 parts to bump up the hp.
