Smile WHy are 911 owners disliked by 914 owners?

I was reading through some of the posts on here and for the most part this page is great. I did however notice a lot of negative press towards 911 owners. In one statement someone said that 911 owners are more worried about what type of wax to use etc. I currently own 1 of each. They are both great cars and a lot of fun. I started with a 1.7 914 and liked the handling and had to get some snort in one so I have built a 914-6. I then wanted something that was wild looking and could seat 4. So I bought a 77 911 and put a 3.0 liter in it. I can tell you this I think both cars are great and yes both cars are near mint and I do worry about about what wax to use or what soap etc. I do however drive my cars and not like your average VW rabbit but rather the way they were intended.

I just had to pose the question not to upset any body but rather to get some insight.

It's the wave. Boxsters are much worse, any car since 95 is bad.

I've had some 911s, I always felt very out of place.

I would like to think that it's more just friendly teasing than any real animosity. I have friends who drive 911s, and they're pretty decent sorts. ...For people who drive cars with the engine in the second best location!

There is, however, some reaction to the "NARP" (Not A Real Porsche) phenomenon. Some, happily few, 911 owners think that the 914 is "just a VW". We don't have much patience for that kind... Sometimes we overreact.

And finally, have you checked on BBSes dedicated to the "modern" Porsches? You'll find about a dozen times more posts about waxes and stereos than you'll find about handling adjustments. Or engine work....

I'm surprised you didn't notice MikeZ (who has an SC Cab, and used to drive a 914-6 conversion) calling hte 911 BBS or email list the "little winky bunch"...

This is an interesting topic and one that get's discussed in every forum about the "other" models. My experience is when you are dealing with porsche owners face-to-face, events, etc. it really doesn't matter because we are all enjoying the marque. Seems like alot of the banter usually boils down to who waves at who when on the road. I really believe that since the 911 (yes, own one of those also) is so recognizable to others it get's all the friendly attention from all porsche owners....but not all porsche owners are familiar with other models (914's, 928's etc.)....especially those buying new ones or not into the history. If you want to get ignored on the road....try driving a 928, hardly any porsche owners wave back! But then again, the only imported 25k of those from 78 to 95 so I chalk it up to not knowing versus not liking. My 2 cents worth.

"Would the guilty party please stand up"
Yeah, you probably read my "whaa-whaa" reply from a few days ago. I don't really think anyone here has any animosity (sp?) towards any other cars-owners-etc, but I'm sure most will agree that some people seem to have nothing else to worry about than color-coordinating their fuzzy dice to their floormats. (My buddy with the 74! And I grill him about it, because he spent more time doing that than trying to get the car running!)
Relate to off-roading - I see guys all the time who spend LOTSA cash on making their MX bikes look trick: plastic parts, graphics, the latest 600 dollar exhaust, every shiny doodad and jangle you could buy, because they read in a magazine somewhere that it'll shave a second off your laptime. And then they won't ride through the muddy sections, because they don't want to get dirty, but the 16 year old on a clapped out beater, held together by duct tape and bailing wire smokes their shorts off. And then they complain about it. Sigh.
I meant to be funny more than I wanted to upset anyone, I was just trying to prove a point, that our cars are often more troublesome than anything else.
Oh yeah, there are 2 boxters nearby, who I've seen a number of times, who've looked the other way when seeing me, but I've also seen an older couple on the x-way who both happily waved and smiled at me. They were in an (early seventies?) Carrera. Even some muscle-car dudes (I was one, once) smile and wave occasionally.

You wanna talk about somebody not liking somebody else, read about the 911 owners and their attitude towards the Boxster owners.

I own one of each (see signature). I can drive the 914 and the Boxster a lot faster in the corners than the 911. So as far as the care are concerned, there's merit to any one of them. When you get smoked by a 944 Turbo at the track, you begin to get the message.

Complaining about the owners is a waste of time. It's not even logical.

What's really distrubing is the 914 owners who turn 911 and then brag about their 911 and try selling 911 parts on the 914 boards! No red bearded names mentioned here.

lol Mike.

You'd make a great add-in character in the remake of It's a MAd, Mad, Mad, Mad World.
