Your Favorite Engine/Trans Jack Adapter
I'm about to pull the engine/trans out of my '73 914 and need some advice on what kind of jack adapters people out there have made to make this process easier. Maybe some pictures with rough measurements?? I have a shop and can fabricate just about anything...
Thanks! |

well read pelicans tech article on engine removal, all you need is 2 jacks and a dolly from home depot or lowes. unless you get a tranny jack you wont be able to move the engine/tranny on the jack. but a dolly works great.

D: I built an a-frame that bolts to my jack. It hooks on the cross bar and has a notch to fit the tranny at the rib casting. Holds the engine and tranny up good enough to wrinch on while in the fully jacked up position. I can't find a way to post a picture here, but I posted it earlyer on a thread called A-Frame.

This is the factory 914 engine/trans jack adapter plate. They would do well in the aftermarket if anyone would make them up.

These are the two pics of the A-frame mentioned in the other thread:
In use-- ![]() Plan view (as it were), but the camera is rotated 90 degrees... ![]() I figured it would be nice to have the pics on one thread, rather than making people search out two different threads. --DD

all you need is a regular floor jack and a block of wood. position the jack under the tranny/engine mate. I'm one small guy (165lbs) and have removed the engine + tranny as one and replaced them too, many times, by myself. Just get a good grip on one of the tranny mounts and jimmy the engine out. Good luck!
PS-it REALLY helps to use the pelican tip of using all thread to steady the front engine moun t going in and coming out... |

Ben: I used to do just that, then I had a back injury. Now I can only lift 25 pounds safetly. Musseling around a motor and tranny is out of the question. This makes it easy for me to move the hole package with one hand. And as far as using all thread to steady it nothing like that is nedded. Just line it up with your motor mount bolts and jack it up until it starts to tilt, then check your tranny mounts and line them up and bolt is in. Easy one handed job. Thats why VW made one. It saved time and that made money.
