A "glasspack" is a fairly generic type of muffler. I believe it consists of an inner tube with holes in it, and the outer tube which is the bumped-out section you see. The space between them is stuffed with glass fibers, which absorb some of the sound.

Not much of it, though...

They tend to deteriorate after a while, too.

They're cheap and small and easy to get and install. Those are their main virtues. They usually are rather low-restriction as well.

No idea on their legality anywhere in particular, but I wouldn't want to drive past an irritable cop with one on my car.

Looks like a Pacesetter exhaust for the 1.7/1.8l. Bursch doesn't have a flared exhaust tip, it's straight. I'm running a Tri-Mill exhaust with a glass pack muffler and it is not loud or obnoxious.

Hey chibone,

Where did you get a Tri-Mil for the 914?

I had one a couple years back that was similar to the Monza but the pipes and canisters were 1-1/2 times bigger approx.

Sambamuffler

It looks like the same system I bought from JCWhitney about 12 yrs ago for a 72 1.7. The pipes finally rusted thru, some pin holes, but the muffler was still good. It wasn't too loud. Never got pulled over by the PA police. or got any BS during State Inspection I think I paid something like $89 for it. Not a bad investment for 12 yrs.. If I could find another oneI would buy it again. It had a great sound!
