OT: Fred is crying and so am I

Fred is my dog. Enjoy the story

I just drifted off to sleep when at 2:30 AM Fred starts going bonkers. Woof, woof, woof! He is not a dog to bark without cause so I get up to investigate. He is at the front gate of his kennel. I don’t see anyone out there but Fred is intensely barking so I grab a flashlight and a gun. As I peek out of the window at the doggy room, the smell hits me like a wave of tear gas…SKUNK. He has a skunk pinned in between him, the house and the front gate of the kennel. Bill and I made the dog pen extra dig-proof to keep Fred in but this has back-fired on me (and the skunk). So I opened the rear gate to let Fred out hoping the skunk will follow. No such luck. Fred’s eyes are tearing up, the smell is so intense that I have lost the ability to determine the source and direction of the smell. I can only assume that he cries because he has been sprayed. There’s only one thing left to do. It’s now 3am in central San Diego. No one will notice a few pops of the ol M-16 right? After all, it’s really just a 22 cal
OK, now how do I get rid of the dead skunk? Keep in mind that Fred is shadowing my every move and I dare not touch his skunk sprayed fur. So I tap into my Gulf war vet benefit package and strap on my gas mask and go in with a shovel. Just as I get the body over the trash bag, Fred leaps in and snatches the body off the shovel and darts around the yard in a frenzy. Although he is an obedient dog, shouting dog commands through a gas mask simply did not work well. Of course once the smell hit, Fred he realized the error of his skunk snatching ways and dropped it. Although he dropped it, he now acts as if I am playing “grab the skunk” with him. He is jumping and barking and weaving about. I am trying to balance the flashlight, the shovel and skunk while keeping my distance. I’m sitting here typing and the smell has invaded the house. I have never smelled something so strong before. I cant get away from it. Does anyone REALLY KNOW how to get rid of the smell?

Boy, I ken tell you ain't from roun' cheer. (Arkansas)
You jest run down to da local Piggly Wiggly an get your sorry self several of dem whoopin big cans of pure tomater juice...no the V-8 mixed kind. Soak that sorry critter ( Fred - not the skunk ) with tomater juice ...let it soak in for about as long as it takes to watch an episode of Gilligan Island and then wash him off.

If'n you really want to keep those clothes you was wearing , soak dem in da juice for a bit , wash , rinse Repeat as necessary.

Now that, THAT'S a funny story - laughed out loud, I shorely did.

And schosh up'n throws a Gilligan's Island in there too.

Nice

Oh yeah, ditto on the t-juice - Fluffy (rest her little snarly soul) would always catch a squirt, and my dad would toss her in the wash basin with plenty of tomato juice.

You and those Skunks Sean, this is not the first time you have told me a story about them. First your old house and now your new house. Tomato juice is the way to do it. I thought everyone knew that. I guess living back in the midwest for a few years helped me a little.

My dog pinned one a few years back when I was in Oklahoma. Took the blast full on in the face from about 6 inches. I quarantined her in the bathroom with every candle my wife could find. Of course being Sunday afternoon and no store open I had to use whatever was available. No tomato juice, but the wife had just bought a case of tomato paste. I went through about half a dozen cans of that crap in the tub with her while my dog is trying to lick it because she thought it tasted good. Still worked though. After a couple of days, she still didn't smell . Of course, she did have a orangish tint about her.....

Hit one with my car a few years back. That was one Porsche people didnt hang around to get a second look at.

Being so low in the front, I lowered it an inch or so, the skunk didnt fit under so well. Tumbled under the car a few times and got caught then was discharged out the back, over a distance of maybe 200-300 feet. Black and white mass of fur, there was alot of red in there too.

I swear it left some pieces behind, and i couldnt find a pressure washer that would shoot T-juice.

Try this (from a Google search)

For pets that have been sprayed, bathe the animal in a mixture of 1 quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide (from drug store), 1/4 cup of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) and a teaspoon of liquid detergent. After 5 minutes rinse the animal with water. Repeat if necessary. The mixture must be used after mixing and will not work if it is stored for any length of time. DO NOT STORE IN A CLOSED CONTAINER - it releases oxygen gas so it could break the container.

Funny story BTW

We have skunks everywhere out here. Around here people are useing GWN7's method, seems to work fine. Then you can do nothing and get used to it, in about 3 months! Oh and your dog will never learn, my dog got 3 straight shots, still won't leave the damn skunks alone.

Petco sells a natural enzyme liquid. $8, what a deal. It worked very well. I tried to pay 6 different people up to $100 bucks, nobody would do the deed There is no trace of odor left on teh dog. I am so glad to still have my chem suit and gas mask. Since Fred refused to back down, he took more than 5-6 direct hits. The skunk then turned to fight face to face. I think he ran out of ammo. Australian Heelers are fearless and resilient. I with he would have cowered just this once. Fred is obviously grateful since his de-lousing. He is so into sniffing and tasting everything...he must have been in doggie hell
