how to put some new bumpers on my 76?

I have a 76 and I would like to convert to the early style chrome bumpers. since I have the bumper shocks to hold the bumper on, how do I mount the older style bumpers?

Do I need to fabricate some type of mouont for them? Does someone make a weld-on mount?

Also, if someone could post some pics of the inside of the bumpers and their mounts, that would be greatly appreciated.

TIA.

Just get a set of early bumpers complete with the rubber tops and the dogbones (rubber spacers). Drill the holes from the wheel well side as the tabs will be there with holes for the correct spacing. The late style bumper tabs on the front sides and the front top lip need to be removed. Then mount the bumpers with bolts as you don't use the later shocks at all. Same in the rear. Put the horns in the early location too along with a set of Pilot driving lites for the fogs.

Here are some pics of the tabs that you need to grind away or otherwise remove. Remember to paint any bare metal you leave, or RUST will set in...

Side of the rear bumper:

...Sorry these are all sideways. I must have forgotten to rotate them before I uploaded.

yep, I used a spot weld cutter very carefully to remove those tabs. Then the early bumpers fit right in place.

So I don't need any mounts?

I know to grind away that flap, but I just need to know if there is some mount that I need, I saw a 72 rear end and it had a little A shaped mount. any ideas?

Dave, Do you have a bumper on that car? It looked liek there was something black on it.

no, they are part of the bumper, just make sure you get the parts Bleyseng mentioned

the "black" you see in the picture is the valance

I used studs mounted into the bumper instead of bolts, made the intallation easier

Heh... Actually, the black parts in those pictures are custom-made wood bumpers... The owner wanted to get rid of the heavy late bumpers and didn't have any early-style bumpers handy, or just wanted to do something different. I think he's been a cabinetmaker at one point or another, so he made up some wood bumpers.

There are rubber "dog-bone" blocks that go in between the bumper and the body. The bumpers are held in by bolts that go through the holes in the body and into weld-nuts in the bumpers. The bolts also go through the dog-bones before they thead into the bumpers.
