FI question

How do you test the head temp sensor (on the right side near the rear spark plug) on a 1.7 to see if it is working ok? Does it have to be removed from the engine and if so how do you get it out without damaging the wire?

Check the specs (ohms) on Brad Anders FI page. http://www.members.rennlist.com/pbanders

To remove the CHT, take a 3/8" 3" extension and grind off one corner of it so there is a hole for the wire to pass by. I think its a deep 13mm socket and then pull the wire thru. Stick on the extension and remove the CHT. Usually the copper washer falls off so you will need another one of those.
Just buy a new CHT and install it instead of trying to reuse the old one.
How does the car start? Hard? Lots of gas smell from it running rich? Thats usually what the symptoms are of a failing CHT/

I would much rather test it in place than remove it. The threads in the cylinder head like to come out with the sender, particularly if it's been in there for many years.

To test the sender, just unplug it from the wiring harness. Hook up your ohmmeter with one probe on the end of the wire, and the other end on a ground. (The cylinder head works, as should the fan shroud or the battery ground post. Using the cylinder head will introduce fewer errors.) Check the numbers against the specs on Brad Anders' page, linked by Geoff.
