A 200 Hp motor?
Common, anyone with a friend with a motor like that? I promis i'm not going to argue or be a dick, i'm just really curious, honestly. When i got into the game, i was told time and time again (by guys who used to race these motors in the Baja 1000 and such) that they really don't last a long time unless your a grandma. BUT, they were using the original technology, and since then, others like Jake have adapted the better technology of nickies and such to get more out of these little buggers.

I have a friend who used to run a 200+ HP 2.0 liter four-banger. Race motor only; he had something like ten grand into the heads, it ran on race gas, had no power at anything but very high revs, and needed constant attention. Went like stink, though.
I think he bumped the motor up to a 2.2, then a 2.4 liter. Again, race-only. He may very well have been making 250 HP by the end. He had problems keeping the motor together above 7000 RPM, though--he wound up putting a lot more money into it to get it to live decently at that RPM level. I think there are one or two customers of Jake's (check the "aircooled technology" board over at http://www.shoptalkforums.com ; they may post there) who have gotten "super hero" motors from him that run ~200 HP. There certainly aren't many of them around, though!! I recall that John Rogers' 2.8 liter four-banger made close to 200 HP, but tons of torque. Another race motor, another very stressed (and therefore somewhat fragile) beast. Most of the competitive E-prod 914s are making 180 HP from their 1.8 liter motors. Again, race-only. I know some who claim to be getting 195 HP, at least until the heads start running too hot. I believe the 2.0 just got accepted into one of the Production classes in the past year or two, so we may see more 200+ HP race motors in the near future. --DD

Cool, thanks Dave. I just talked to a local guy who is rebuilding his 914. He wanted to stay with the 4 because he was had doubts about putting in a 6. He sent Jake an email asking about a built motor, which would run on Californias 91octain and produce in the relm of 160hp, and run most of the time on the street. He was quoted $8K. And i think the super hero motors run $13K.
I just cant fathum spending that kind of money unless i was racing in a specific class, even then there would have to be a decent size purse. What are the terms behind the E-production 914s? I've heard of the term, whats it all about?

I don't know all the rules, not by a long shot. What I do remember--
Some lightening of the car is allowed. The windshield can be removed. (Not any more I think, but a number of 914s have been grandfathered in because it was legal.) Plastic fenders are de rigeur. Four 40mm throttle bodies. I think injection was made legal last year, but I'm not sure if injected cars have to use different size throttles. Stock displacement, I think. There may have been an allowance for going slightly larger. I believe cam and compression are "free", but I could be wrong. Stock brakes, up until a few years ago when they allowed 914-6 brakes. The cooling system can be modified; cooling air can be ducted from the headlight buckets to the cooling fan. (This rule was evidently written for British cars, but the air-cooled folks took it and ran with it. These cars have a "sewer pipe" running through the cockpit to take air from the front to the fan.) Suspension is pretty free, but I think you need to keep the original pickup points and design. You may be able to fudge thepickup points slightly in some cases. Wheels and tires are some spec maximum. Umm... I forget the rest. Most EP and FP cars run with very few blades on their cooling fan. Some run with none, just the four posts that hold the pulley for the alternator. They can (just) cool well enough with the ram-air effect when driving at speed that they do not need a full fan. Pushing all that air makes for a significant pumping loss, reducing your power output, so they ditch the blades. --DD
