fast idle problem

MY 1972 914 1.7 fast idles far too long.15 to 20 mins before it idles normally. I checked for vacumm leaks, did not find any. Any suggestions?

the aux air valve is begining to stick. take it apart at teh pinch seam and clean it . I have done 5-6. it is easy. this part is NLA

You can also just squirt PB Blaster into it to free up the rotory valve.
Easier than taking it apart.

If the AAR eventually closes after 15-20 minutes, then it's likely that the internal heater is broken. Normal engine heat eventually closes it after a long time. To repair the heater, search the BBS for a posting by DD where he describes the process. You need to replace the 13 ohm heater with 13 ohms worth of wire-wound resistors.

Geoff, you posted the corrections so I won't bother to edit my post.

Brad's post points out an easy way to test the heating element in the AAR. Just check the resistance from the plug on the wire going to it to the case of the AAR. It should be 13 ohms. If it's zero or infinity, you definitely have a broken heating element.

I did not know about the heater element fix, thanks. I threw some away because of that. if you feel like paying for shipping, I'll fix it for ya.
