Points rubbing block rubbing off too quick
 

i have an actual question....my points are wearing like real fast and i cant figure out why....my dwell changes like a MoFo, and timing is way off too. Do i need a new dizzy, maybe a pertronix or what?

Pertronix will eliminate the wear problem. But before you do that, are you putting any lubrication on the distributor cam? There should be a very slight amount so the block on the points doesn't wear. Just be careful not to put too much grease, you don't want the grease to get on the points themselves.

yes i put lots on, run it, then wipe off excess with my finger. set dwell to 45 then it stays for a week then goes to the 50s+

It should be a distributor cam lube. Yes there is a tube at your FLAPS.
You may want to check the freeplay in the dist. shaft when you have it out to replace the points.

the shaft is able to be pushed in, but cant be pulled out any. the push in is around 1cm (as in centimetrs) and I use the purple stuff in the points box. Everytime i ask for distributor cam lube they give dielectric grease. WTF???

Find a FLAPS that has "distributor cam lube in a tube" then try that. or go to a local repair shop and get a small amount.

replace the points with a pertronix or the like...it's "set and forget" which is nice :)

Points lube does not go onto the cam (tho a light coat doesn't hurt), but onto the back side of the rub block on the points. Put a glob on that step and do not rub it off. As the rub block wears, the grease will self apply.

(edit) I haven't used points in years. Pertronix is gud.

can i use Di-electric grease?

Normaly, a little pill of grease comes with a set of points.
I dunno zactly what it is, but it *looks* like dielectric grease.
It's worth a shot.

it's thinner than dielectric grease.....but not by much. I'm thinking about a pertronix or something, although mikeZ recommends the Crane Optical? stuff?

I've used the same Pertronix unit for ....what.....5-6 years.
2 things can fu....oops...Pelican.....mess em' up.

1) getting 2 wires crossed.
2) leaving the ignition on ( without the engine running) for an expended period.

If you can't deal with either....you're in the Zs class.:D

Dude - Just get the correct grease. Or buy a new set of points (since you need them anyway) and use the grease that comes with them. It is thick, sticky stuff, way thicker than dielectric grease.

I know what happens when you don't use the right grease, it's exactly what you are seeing.

I guess make sure you are setting the dwell correctly too and don't have the points adjusted up against the cam too much.

no man i have feeler guages and stuff....i've done it before. nobody knows what i'm talking about when i ask for dizzy cam grease, they give me dielectric grease.....might just pull a Dan Root and blow up all over them

haha, dielectric grease is not the stuff to use. Dizzy cam grease is the ticket. Shouldnt wear too fast at all.
