Happy new owner of '71 1.7L , but I got's some Q's
Just surfed in, getting ready to order some parts off of the Pelican site, and I noticed the BB.
So far, I am really happy with the car. It's my replacement after a red light runner totalled my other car. Anyway, (get to the point dave), here''s my Q s: 1) I am getting a nice "thud" out of the left rear upon accelerating from a stop. CV's? or Wheel Bearing? 2)Supposedly, I have 911 front discs. How do I tell? and I guess stock pads will do?? 3) Idle seems to hunt after car is warmed up. Thanks all!!! oh yeah, it's canary yellow!! |

the 914's came with a 4 bolt hub so if they are 5 bolt they are 911's

The "thud" could be the CVs. Probably not the bearings. Could be something loose in the suspension--a loose bolt or some such.
My advice: Tighten all of the nuts and bolts to spec, NOW. That includes the four on the inner CV and the four on the outer CV. Torque spec on those is 31 lb-ft. Check Haynes for the torque values of as many of the other fasteners as you can find. I had a CV come apart after making that kind of noise for about two days. I was not happy. On the brakes, check to see if the discs are solid, or "ventilated". The ventilated ones look like two solid disks with an air-space in between them, with pieces of metal across from the one disk to the other. A ventilated disc will be a 911 part. Some early 911s had solid discs, but it is unlikely that someone would go through the trouble to "upgrade" to those. Five-bolt rims can be put on a car with stock brakes. I'm not fond of the two most common ways of doing that, but it can be done. The idle hunt is probably a lean condition. If you have a knob on top of the ECU (the "brain"), you can try tweaking it a few "clicks" clockwise. Keep track of the number of clicks. Otherwise, you'll have to go for some customization. 1. What year is it? 70-72 check out the outboard motor mount. 73-76 check the inside motor mount. Rev the engine while watching it with the engine lid open, there should be little movement. C-V's usally click, bearings usally grown, but if the mounts are O.K. look into re-packing the C-V's (if you don't know how long it has been since they were done, do it anyway) and look for rust in the both suspension consoles. Are the rear springs sagging? You may also be bottoming out, do to weak springs and a/or a failed shock absorber.
2. Look at the Pelican article "911 front suspension spotters guide" I 'think' you can put 911 front calipers on while keeping the 4 bolt pattern, but you need to change to 911 spidles so most people just repace the whole thing and get the 5 lug pattern and stiffer torsion bars. 3. Sound's like "lean hunt" adjust the idle mixture knob on the brain. Count the clicks, and turn it clockwise to enrich. Oh yeah, Signal Orange is a faster color ![]() |

hey guys...he has a 71 and the early cars don't have a mixture knob on the brain do they? So how would one adjust the mixture on those cars? A variable resistor pot on the CHT sensor line?
White is faster cause its color pigment weighs less than the deeper colors' pigment 8^} (Sorry, couldn't resist) |

let's see: 1) The car has the 924 cookie cutter rims all around. I believe teh fronts were exchanged for teh 911 ones for the 5 lug pattern and the rears were just drilled. 2) Ok; i will go and check the CV's Motor mounts Suspension (new KYB's in back I believe, the back sits a little higher than the front right now) 3) haven't checked the "brain" yet for knobs. will do. how bout i just strip all the paint to metal and clear coat it clear! ![]() THANKS AGAIN! |

You might also check your rear brakes for the THUD. You might have a sticky brake pad hanging up since you say it makes the noise when you start from a full stop.

The idea to strip the paint and go bare has been done...certain bike racers do just that...they don't even clear coat it, especialy titanium frames...I wonder how much weight it really saves, and the resultant speed increase...they also shave their legs nd wear pointy hats for aerodynamics...how extreme do you want to go?
