Need help with Muffler Identification
I need some help identifying these mufflers.
I purchased a parts car that came with 2.0 SS Heat Exchangers and a (new in the box) Bursche glass pack muffler for 2.0. Now I have acquired another parts car and it has a nearly new Bursche with a quiet pac muffler. This new car definitely has 1.8 heat exchangers so I am assuming the muffler is for a 1.8 as well - both were installed on the car which has a 2.0 motor. So now I have removed the exhaust and was planning on selling on E-Bay but I notice that the Bursche quiet pack muffler looks like it would fit my 2.0 exchangers. When I set the two mufflers next to each other, everything looks nearly identical (except glass pac vs. reg muffler). I would rather use the Quiet Pac design but how can I know for sure that this is a 2.0 or 1.8 setup. Is it even possible to install a 2.0 muffler on 1.8 exchangers? When I'm saying that both mufflers are nearly identical, I mean that the exhaust pipe exits in the exact same place as the 2.0 muffler - when both are lined up the same. I would think that if it were a 1.8 muffler, the exit point would have to be different since the 1.8 exchangers curve up-wards. I don't have a photo right now but I will post one tomorrow evening. Any advice would really be appreciated. Thanks.......Vern |

2.0L mufflers and heat exchangers are incompatable with any 1.7/1.8L parts. l.7/1.8L mufflers and exchangers are identical.

Just to make sure--when you say you have 2.0 exchangers, you mean the 73-74 2.0 ones, right? And when you say the other car has 1.8 exchangers, you mean the ones for the 70-73 1.7 and the 74-only 1.8?
If so, you will find that the muffler flanges are a slightly different distance apart between the two. The inlet for the 1.7/1.8 muffler will also be a little higher, relative to the top of the muffler, than the 2.0 version. If you're talking about the 75-76 versions of both of those types of exhaust, the 1.8 and 2.0 stuff is identical. --DD

Ok. for additional clarification.
I have 1974 2.0 ss exchangers that i'm keeping. I just got a '73 with a 2.0 engine (ec case) but had 1.8 heat exchangers and a Bursch quiet pac muffler. The muffler on this car "looks" surprizingly similar to my '74 2.0 Bursch glass pac. My preference would be to keep the Bursch quiet pack muffler to use with my '74 2.0 ss heat exchangers - but, this muffler was installed on a car with 1.8/1.7 heat exchangers. Te easy way for me to solve the whole problem would be to try and install the quiet pac on my 2.0 heat exchangers - but, my engine is out for repairs. I'm gonna post some photos tonight and maybe you will see what I'm talking about - cause, this muffler definately looks identical to my 2.0 muffler.............and who knows what the prior owner did... |

The 2.0L exchanger pipes point straight back towards the muffler. The 1.7/1.8L exchangers point backwards and bend upwards to mate with the muffler.
If you have the Haynes Manual, look on pages 14 and 15 to see the differances. Phil |

I might add, the 2.0L exchangers and muffler can be mounted on a 1.7/1.8L engine and vice versa but because the pipe diameters of the 2.0L and 1.7/1.8L exhaust systems differ, you will get the best performance by matching the engine to the appropriate exhaust system.
Also, keep in mind that the exhaust hanger bracket for the 2.0L engine will not work with the 1.7/1.8L exhaust system and vice versa. Phil |

Problem Solved:
When I was taking photos, I discovered that the exhaust flanges (i.e., the area that bolts to the heat exchangers) are actually slightly closer together on the 2.0 muffler than on the other muffler. Thanks for all your advice. I understand the concept of matching mufflers to heat exchangers, hangers, etc.. I just really wanted to use the quiet pac vs the glass pac. On my car, I will currently have a 2.0 motor, 2.0 ss HE, 2.0 hanger, and a very loud 2.0 glass pac - But, with the dough I will make parting out this parts car......I probably will be able to get a new muffler that keeps me happy.
