Duh, this might help, it's a Bursch muffler, exhaust assembly that we have--it says 914.

That's a pix of the muffler thing

Look at where the intake bolts to the head: 3 bolts = 2.0 liter, 4 bolts = 1.7 or 1.8 Next look at the case and find a serial number stamped in. In the archives you'll find what engine equals what, but I think GAxxxx and GCxxxx were 2.0 engines; there are a bunch of combinations. I think you can also find this in the Pelican tech articles.

find the engine number on top of the case and compare it to this list:

of course, the internals might actually be different from what it was 35 years ago.
people have been known to rebuild these engines from time to time ...

Here's another source of information. This site has serial numbers for the cases & the heads

The muffler is hard to use for engine identification. This is because you can mix-and-match exhaust systems as long as you match the heat exchangers. I.e., you can put a 2.0 muffler on a 1.8 engine as long as you use 2.0 heat exchangers.

I had a similar muffler that looked just like yours. It was for a 1.8 but when I finally acquired a 2.0 muffler, it was virtually identical except the input holes were spaced about an inch further apart.
