the question is am I going to gain much from a expensive header over stock
the stock exhaust is not a bad design from what I can tell smooth curves no real restrictions and stays up out of the way I have cut the heat tin off for weight savings and it looks good (73 2.0) with a chevy or ford the stock cast iron exhaust manifold is obviously restrictive any thoughts would help Dale |

I have my choice of any muffler I wish to use as my pile of mufflers is large.I only use Stock as I think they work best. Steve

A real header will give you somewhere between 3-10 HP on a stock motor, depending on all of the details. The effective ones seem to be (in increasing order of both performance and cost) Kerry Hunter headers, Eurorace headers, and CFR headers.
Hunter claims a dyno'd 5 HP on a stock motor, but I'm not sure which muffler the testing was done with. --DD |

FYI - if you use or plan to use your car in any organized track events (autox/time-trial/club race) be sure to check out the rules for the class you'll be in! Most of the stock or "improved" (near-stock) classes do not permit headers, but they do usually permit any muffler.

Grassroots Motorsports magazine is in process of doing a 914 Project Car... They are the ones who dyno'd my header on a Fuel Injected 2.O (see Grassroot's web page for car details)...
