You wont get much. It also isnt worth tearing your whole engine apart just to install.

I have to get the heads rebuilt anyway cause of a nasty exaust leak I may replace the piston heads if they are damaged also, if i do that would it still be hard to put the cam in?? also how much horses would i get 5? 10? or would i be better off port polishing and a free flow exaust

The cam is in the middle of the engine. You have to do a complete rebuild or overhaul to install it. Up to you if you think it's worth it.

You will have to tweak the fuel injection to get it to run reasonably with the Web 73. This is best done on a dyno with a wide-band O2 sensor, but a whole lot of driving around with a WBO2 would probably also work. For all the info that exists (just about) on the D-jet fuel injection system, see http://members.rennlist.com/pbanders .

You can get more results by finding a 2.0 that's rebuildable.....same $$ to rebuild it with a stock 100 +/- horses.

All a cammed 1.7 does is pissoff the stock fuel injection.

A cam might be $155, but the lifters are another $150 for lifters, another $35 for the cam gear, plus extra for the bolts that hold it on (your stocker is riveted to the cam!), plus a full gasket set, plus a set of bearings because while you're in there you might as well...

So you're in for a full overhaul, to the tune of ~$3000, to swap cams on a stock 1.7 motor. Less if you're doing all the work yourself, very possibly more if you're paying someone else to do the work.

Or you pick up a used 2.0 for $1500-$2000. Cheaper, but it's already used, and no real indication of how long it will last.

Mike's point was that the rebuild on the 1.7 (which is needed when you swap cams) costs about the same as a rebuild on a 2.0 does. So the only real difference is the initial cost of the used 2.0 motor.

As for VW engines, many of the VW Type IV engines will drop right in. I believe the ones from the 411 and 412 coupe are the ones that work, but it could be the wagon that does. The 72+ Bus has a Type IV engine but the oil filler and dipstick are in the wrong place, just like the rest of the 411/412s are. That can be dealt with, but it means making up a block-off plate and figuring out how to install a dipstick without getting metal shavings (from drilling) into the oil system.

The regular "Bug" motors can be made to fit, but then again so can anything if you're willing to weld. If you're going to swap, might as well get something better than a Type I...
