I know this has been discussed before, and no I am not trying to do it, but why can't a type 1 vw fit into a 914? I just was reading through the 912 (hopefully to be my next porsche) forum on this site and there was a post about a type 1 into a 912. I know the 912 is diffrent, but they said the type 1 fit right to the 901 trans (with a diffrent fly wheel/clutch). Now can't the 901 out of a 911 be adapted to the 914? My only point in bringing this up is to be asking the question. Just one of those random thoughts that pass through my head at 0017hrs (est).

Yes, it can fit. Heck, anything up to and including a Chevy 350 can fit, so the VeeWee can indeed be made to fit.
You'll need to figure out some kind of mounting scheme, the stock mounts don't work. In fact, on some of the Type Is, there is no engine mount per se, the engine is cantilevered off of the transmission. You'll need to fabricate an exhaust, as none of the Type I stuff that I am aware of will fit correctly in the 914. You may wind up needing to re-work the shift linkage, depending on the motor mount and exhaust. And at the end of that, you'll have a 70 HP lump. Or you can spend as much money as a quality Type IV buildup, and have ~130 HP for ~10K miles. Of course, you can offset some of the costs by selling your 914 motor to someone who wants to put reliable power into a Bug. It's a popular conversion. Tell me why you want to do this again?? --DD |

I have a 914, that I am putting a Type1 Bus case in. I used two J tube sets to build the exhaust system ( the motor I am using has a WBX 2.1 Crank so that the 914 flywheel can be used). It looks like it will be a fairly simple installtion,I have not modified the sheet metal yet. The 1955cc motor I am using has about 100hp as is. I am planning on building a 90.5 x 76 Type4 with SCAT crank, which will alos have a 1955cc displacement. I want to see the differance it performance. Both motors will have 40 IDF's .I will run the two cars against each other as a real world test. Steve

I am not planing on doing this. I just rember that there was a thread a while back that said it could not be done. Might be a low buck option for some of us on a shoe string budget. Forget about HP some of us would like it if our 914 just ran. I know I spent three years working on mine before I found a reliable/cheap 1.7l with stock FI and SS heat exchangers. The guy was doing a 2.0l conversion and need some extra cash and let it go for next to nothing. It has run like a champ for the last four months. Not all of us are that lucky. And from what it sounds like sometimes, who on this board doesn't have a old bug/van motor just laying around?

I, for one. I've never owned a Type I/II/III, or any aircooled car other than a 914.
Besides, with the custom fabrication you'll have to do to get everything working, you'll probably wind up spending as much time and money as if you went out and got a decent used 1.7 motor. Or more. --DD |
