Wahoo! I actually got to drive my car for the first time since purchase last night and to work this morning. Asside from a teminally sick battery, all is well except...
...when making a sharp turn in either direction, I here/feel a bump once the steering wheel gets past a certain point. I know the car has the turbo tie rod upgrade, but I'm not sure what else the PO had done to the steering. Does anyone have some ideas as to where i should start looking for this problem (besides the front) and is this potentially dangerous. It does take a pretty sharp turn to make this happen. Thanks, ------------------ Dave 1970 914-6 (soon GT) |

Hmmm, could be a million different things...one obvious thing is to check whether you have any tire/wheel rubbing going on. Is it running a stock setup, or does it have wider rubber? You may be feeling contact with the wheel well or fender lip when you crank the steering all the way. Just a WAG...

You can also try checking on the universal joints in the steering shaft. Get upside-down under the dash and you should see both of those. They can get loose sometimes, and that will result in a clunking in the steering.
Pretty much, check the whole linkage from the wheel out to the steering knuckles. The bushing in the steering column could be broken, the tie rods could be loose, the rack could be dying, or... --DD |

If the car is lower than stock you may need a "bump steer" kit which lowers the rack. Or make sure the caster is right, this affects the steering feedback.

Another item to check is the ball joints.
Make sure that the ball joint is fully seated against the A arm. There is a sloted grove for the ball joint to seat onto the A arm. |
