What are the wiper switches that fit a '74 914? I was thinking about swaping out to an electric style fluid sprayer. The spare tire thing is kind of weak.
Thanks |

I have heard of people using early 924 switches.
There is a circuit in at least some 72+ 914 steering columns that goes active when the stalk is pulled back. This was used for the "flick-wipe" system that was installed in some cars. My 74 has it. If you can figure out how exactly that works, you can tap into that system to run your electric pump. --DD |

For an inexpensive solution: I purchased a $10 electric windshield washer pump at Pep Boys, mounted it near the brake fluid reservoir in the front trunk, and ran wiring to a dash-mounted "momentary contact" switch I purchased at Radio Shack. Unless your car came with all options, there should be some 1/2" holes already drilled thru the dash under the black waffle-pattern vinyl. They are for optional switches (i.e., fog light switch and rear-window defogger). I used an inline fuse and found a vacant connector on my fuse panel. Viola!

The 924 switch will work, but if you're willing to take some time and effort, you can modify the existing switch asmy. If you subscribe to Porsche Panorama (PCA), then the April 78 issue has the details (it also has my car in "Personal Prosches" which is why I remember the issue :-).
Anyway, you pull the steering wheel, unplug the connectors at the bottom of the column switches (2), loosen 4 screws, and carefully remove the whole switch asmy. The washer switch is on the left and has 2 hoses going into it. Two screws retain the pressure switch. Once out, the switch comes off. Basically what you do is to cut off the original pressure switch, leaving the mounting ears and metal mount. You them drill the center hole till you can fit a microswitch into it. You will probably have to play with setbacks of the switch till the lever consistantly operates it, but it does work...I just did one 2 wks ago. |
