Turn Signal Switch Doesn't Return to Neutral

After I complete a turn, my turn signal switch doesn't return to the neutral/off position. Happens for both left and right turns. What could be the problem?

Thanks,
Steve

Inside the steering column is a disk shaped piece that has a tab on it so that when the wheel is turned back after a turn it touches the inside of the signal switch. They tend to break off after 30 years or so of use and I don't think they can be bought any longer so manual canceling will be required. If you decide to replace the turn signal stalk you'll see it when you open things up.
