Headlights and fog lights.

Anybody try the Hella 7" light replacement with some new bulb technology? How about something for the driving lights. I drive in the dark about half the time, and the deer around here are like flies. i could use some brighter peepers. Anybody try anything different?

H4s are a popular upgrade, and they throw more light than incandescent bulbs. Higher-wattage H4s are available, but they may require a relay to help deal with the electrical load.

Fellow by the name of John who had a very clean, black 1.7 car he brought on the Alpine 500 had the H4's and some of those Pilot driving lights in the foglight holes that threw a very impressive amount of light.

He said he had not installed a relay, but I don't know what his total megawattage of light was.

Question

I will definitely due the new Hella H$ jobs. On the driving lights, are the bulbs replaceable on the stockers, or do you have to replace the hole shooting match? Pilots, where do you get those?

GPR and Pelican sell the US style H-4s that will fit the 914....stock are 55/65w I believe....plenty good for the road. I have them on the 911 and the 356 replica as well.

The s/s Pilots "I" have I got from www.camp914.com .....they fill in the spots to the sides and down low where I need them.....

He has a limited amount of products....I don't know how they compare pricewise to other vendors but they were reasonable and easy to find.

I have not gotten anything from the camp914 guys, but will. I think supporting the poeple who are mental enough to be into 914's and are willing and able to make things available, kinda like getting stuff from Pelican.

The stock fog lights are pretty dim, poor design IMHO

I have the Hella H4's on both my 914 and '88 BMW 528e. I love them. They put out nice crisp, with light. They also have a nice pattern of light with a very defined cut off pattern (I mean they have that HID light pattern that cuts off the light so it does not shine in oncoming drivers eyes). I suspect that you could up the wattage without causing glare to oncoming drivers - however, that might not be legal. The H4's also shine light to the right and up-wards which is designed to illuminate street signs and that works very well.

Switching from stock bulbs on your 914 to the H4's will be like night & day (no pun intended).

As far as fog lights - there is a guy selling a kit that will convert stock 914 bulbs to H3 bulbs. I bought the kit but I never installed it. I was disappointed that this guy is charging $65 for what is basically two pieces of 1" copper pipe cut about 1/2 inch long and a couple of notches in it. Even with the kit, it still doesn't not change the light pattern of the stock 914 lens.

I have seen the Pilot fogs and they are an almost exact fit and the light is great and the lenss can be clear or fog - that would be my choice.

headlights & relay kit

I have used Hella H4 100 watt for many years,

Easy relay solution - Victoria British parts has a 2-relay & wire kit available & I recently put them in my 914/6 and in my MGB- easy setup & works great - I am going to use another kit for my 5 1/4" Hella GT driving lights. Pelican ought to start selling this kit

PO already installed the h4, so i have no idea what a dimly lit 914 is like.
just got some of the pilots and the seem to make things brighter.
still light most of the day so haven't really had a good chance to use them yet. might have to adjust set up once the winter nite shows at 4pm around here

Most of the time, the "headlight relay kit" is not supposed to replace the stock high/low relay; it is instead used as an extra relay. It usually winds up mounted somewhere near the lights.
