How 2 identify 2L Stainless Heat Exch's

I took some SS heat exchangers off of a 2liter '74 car and put them on Ebay. Someone has asked are they true 2 liter exchangers or are theyoff of a 1.7 or 1.8? I figured if they came off of a 2liter that they must be for a 2L. Help Thanks, Pete

do the ends of the HE's kick upwad a couple inches?

if they are completely flat the whole way... they are 2L

if the ends kick up a few inches, they are 1.7/1.8

it dictates which exhuast hanger, which muffler you can use

This may be your listing:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/PORSCHE-914-STAINLESS-STEEL-Heat-Exchangers-2-0-L-NICE_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33630QQihZ016QQite mZ260030389546QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

These look like 2.0 exchangers to me. The ends of the heat exchangers (the side that goes to the muffler) will be flat. If they are for 1.7 or 1.8 cars, the ends will curve (noticeably) up wards. The enchangers in this add look flat and not curved - so they are 2.0.

This first pic is of the 75-76 heat exchangers. You can see that these are a litttle different from the 70-74 style...

This next pic is of a pair of 1.7 SSIs. It clearly shows the "kick-up" near the back of the exchanger.

I don't have a similar pic for 2.0 exchangers, but they pretty much go straight back instead of kicking up like the above picture.

hey guys, just for clarification - you can use the 1.7 HE's on a 2.0 as long as you use the 1.7 muffler and hanger correct? what would be the downside to this?

Not sure about the SS exchangers, but when comparing diameters of tubing I could fit the pipes of my 1.7 inside the pipes of my 2.0

Much smaller

The SSIs are evidently the same diameter for the 1.7 or the 2.0 versions.

Rcrgrl is correct, as long as you use the matching muffler and muffler hanger (and muffler gaskets) you can switch between the 1.7 and 2.0 styles with no problems. Even the heater parts should all fit the same, as well.

Note that the 75-76 exhaust uses significantly different heater parts, though.

I had a 1.7 motor bored to 1.8. Someone gave me a pair of factory 1.8 exchangers, so I put them on. The difference in flow was very noticeable, reved much easier too. I would think a 2.0 would be pretty choked with a 1.7 exhaust. The SS are all the same size i think, though, so it wouldn't matter

The factory 1.8 exchangers would either be identical to the 1.7 ones (if the 1.8 in question was a 74 1.8) or identical to the 75-76 2.0 ones (if the 1.8 in question was a 75+ one). I'm not sure what you put on, but I'd be surprised if there was much improvement going to a stock 1.8 exhaust.

there was a noticeable difference in size between them, the size of the 2.0's but they had the kickup at the back. I know they weren't 2.0's because I had to change the muffler setup when I took them off.

They're off the car still now, so I can take pics of the difference

Did they look like my pic above? Those would be SSIs--the 1.7 SSIs and the 2.0 SSIs are the same diameter as each other, and both are larger than the stock 2.0 exchangers.

Here's what I took off, compared to another set I had. You can see the noticeable difference in the size of the tubes. ID of the larger one's is about 1.33", the smaller ones about 1.17"
