Broken off front trunk release handle

I just bought a 914-6 on Ebay that has a broken front trunk release handle. The guy pulled it and it just fell off in his hand. How do you fix this? How do you open the front trunk? Just in case you want to see what this project is Ebay Item number: 330064083162

The front trunk can be opened by removing the front bumper. Two bolts in each of the two front fender wells for early cars, not sure for 75/76 cars. With the bumper removed, there is a small hole in the front panel right by the trunk latch; use a screwdriver to trip the latch release.
Don't remember the exact configuration of the handle mechanism, but I think the handle and bracket unbolt from inside the car, and the assembly and cable are pulled back through the passenger compartment. Cable and sheath should be available from our host.

Burton, you bought the brown car?

Once you open the trunk, you'll find that the handle is held on with two allen-head bolts that you access from inside the trunk. They're waaaaay at the back, near where the springs that hold the lid up are. They go down into the handle mechanism.

Anyway, you can remove those screws, then pull the whole handle mechanism down. Pull the handle out "too far", and you'll see a set-screw that lets you remove the lock. I don't recall if you have to do that to replace the cable or not, but I remember it being relatively obvious once I had the handle assembly unbolted from the car.

The rod is sheered off at the handle. On the broken off handle you can see the set screws that I take it hold the rod in. The question is: is the cable a part with a rod at the end that goes into the handle? Do I just change out the cable and remove the setscrews from the handle and the broken rod can be worked out? Is this where these break? Did you look at the pictures of the brown car? By the way this car is going to look like the 916 in San Francisco in blue with Cork leather when finished but with GT bumpers. Spare almost no expense.

I don't have experience with the handle breaking, so I can't really tell you where they "typically" break. The cable is just a cable, AFAIK. I would suggest taking the whole thing (all of the pieces of the handle and the cable) out of the car and poking around with it for a bit. It is probably easiest to get a used handle from a wrecker's or the classifieds; it should go in pretty much as one piece.

Bob: This Joe Sharp posting as Linda cause my log-in needs Dave's help. I have a handle and a cable I just took out of my race car. Linda says we need to get $10 for it but at that price I think I can Key it to your key. I had a handle break on me once and was able to just screw the wire into the handle more and it worked fine.

I am happy to take the cable if you can help with the lock that would be nice but do not need to as I need to rekey all the locks. I am off to Asia tonight and will not back in LA till next Friday. There's also an article in the "tech articles" section of this site about re-keying the locks. Though it always helps to have someone with experience around when you're messing with something.
