Turn Key Nothing Happens
Just finished my 914 project up. Went to turn the key and.......nothing. Here's the run down. New starter, new battery, all new ground straps and cables. It started when I left it. I have a hunch it might be the ignition switch. The tech article on this site covering ignition switch removal doesn't look like my steering column. If anyone has a good wiring diagram or experience replacing the switch in a 70 let me know. By the way I have a 70 1.7. Thanks

The pre 75 (at least the 72-74 I have) have a slightly different looking switch but dis-assemble the same way.

Hello
71 has single stalk unit. The switch sits inside the housing, just remove the 12 plug connector, the steering wheel, the c-ring behind the steering wheel then unscrew the one 6mm hex at the rear seen from the underside after loosing the clamp turn the ignition on and pull the complett unit . Be carfull as the wires can get catched in the gap and torn. Then you have the unit in your hand and can replace the ignition switch. Othert way is to remove the steering wheel and then remove the stalk and inner lock halfside. feed the wires back. Grüsse |

But before you do all of that work, make sure that it is the ignition switch that is your problem. Go through Jim Thorusen's starter troubleshooting procedure, found in the Tech Articles section of this very web site.

Thanks for the advice. My ignition switch is a little different but I did narrow down the problem to this area.
