Unhappy Yet another shifter problem

Had a fun experience yesterday. My car never shifted well, but it usually gave me what I wanted after a few tries. I was usually able to select reverse and second through fifth very easily with only first giving me problems. Well, after a day of autocrossing and barely able to engage reverse or first, my linkage gave out on me. It looks like a weld popped. Should I just have it rewelded or should I try to locate a new (used?) part? This is a 1970 914-6 with a tail shifter and the linkage is the front rod just under the shift lever (see picture). The funny part is just before it broke, it went into first easier than it ever had under my ownership.

Any and all thoughs and comments welcome.
